Checking the oil level

Remove dipstick and wipe clean. Insert dipstick all the way down. Remove dipstick again and using a lighter ignite the fuel diluted oil. The upper edge of the flame is your oil level. ?

A question when checking the oil level, do I insert the dipstick all the way back in or just until it reaches a green mark on the top of the dipstick (seated but not fully inserted)? Thanks!

You should insert the dipstick fully before checking the level. Also, after removing the stick, wipe it off and leave it out for about 5 minutes before re-inserting it so that the oil in the dipstick tube has a chance to run back down into the crankcase. This will make reading the level much easier.

I have a dumb question. When I check the oil level I have a hard time seeing where the oil comes up to in the dipstick. I wipe the dipstick off and put it down the hole for a few seconds then pull it out and it's hard for me to tell where in the stick it comes up to. Does anyone have tips to help me read my oil level? Thanks.

I clean the dipstick off and simply color the dipstick about halfway up with a black sharpie marker. Makes it real easy to see the oil level

It's always better to be a little underfull than overfull.

As long as the crank is not splashing through it, I'd definitely take being a touch overfilled. I pretty much overfill everything I've ever had.

because i had so much trouble getting a good reading from my dipstick: look at the back side of it. third oil change always putting in exactly 6.2 qts but no matter how many times i wipe the stick it came out looking Way overfilled. look at the backside and i see a correct reading at the right level. I noticed in some other thread people saying wipe it a bunch of times and other things but yeah/ look at the back side of dipstick and i could easily tell where the level was even though the other side is a mess... putting this here because this thread title fits the problem.

When doing an oil change. I walk off and let it do whatever it does when I'm not looking in the driveway and come back about 15min later. In-between changes I check on a totally cold motor. Ends up being the same reading as the by the book; warm it up then let it sit for 15+ min. I can't remember the exact time.

I think the dipstick is in the way of some drain back passage from the head to the crankcase and makes it a freaking mess if you check it right after it had oil.dumped it it or it's been running. Might be wrong on that theory but all of my other cars were/are "easier" to get a good reading on with far less waiting.

flip the dipstick over and look for the oil on the opposite side of the hashmarks. it's easier to see when the oil is clean.
