The Dragon, I remember it well. A weekend long 'Triumph Days' event in October, 2003. Aboard a 2001 Triumph Sprint ST at the time....(stock photo)

Due to the layout and space constraints between the white housing and the black housing (cover) I don't see how thats possible. Only thing that might be possible is to tie bi-color led's into the shift mechanism or instrument panel to change each LED color. Wouldn't be a simple mod by any means, or the risk of really messing something up.
I just push my shifter button in Drive & the gears show up on the dash, right hand side.

Honestly, why does anyone need these lights? I never look at the dash or the console, when I put it in gear, because if you "feel" where the clicks, you should know what position it's in?

NOW....

In 40+ years of driving, it's my first automatic and I cannot for the life of me memorize the sequence of those vague notches. When the steering wheel is cocked to block the shift position lights on the gauge cluster, it would be nice to have way to see the gear selection. When I'm doing a three-point turn at the top of a long, narrow road, I often forget if I started in D or S, so how many clicks is it to R? I basically fish around until the back-up camera appears.

I HATE that the shifter indicator is missing in the console near the shifter. I still look there for it when I shift the transmission 5 years on!

for the same reason people use damper on Ranger's tailgate... to each their own...
That is the truth, and well said btw.
No offense Dave @AzScorpion, no damper on my Rangers tailgate.
Back on topic, most of the time I just feel for the clicks and listen to tell what gear I'm in.

But can’t you just slap the shifter back from R straight to D and it stops there?

Now, I have to go out in the garage, back out, and play around in the driveway again, proving to my neighbours, once again, that I’m nutty. 🤪
