Yeah... people are making this way, way more of a big deal deal than it actually is. On the last ranger I had, I put almost 200K miles on it and never once did I feel the need to have a damped rear tailgate, and it was a heavier steel tailgate too.
Even the TFL Truck guys did it. Time stamped video - Ooh a damped tailgate challenge comparison. How much do you want to bet when he gets to the Ranger he drops it like a total F'ing dumb ass, knowing full well it's not damped.
Indeed... watch the video, some of those are taking so long to go down that the guy pushes them down with his hand. i can have my Ranger tailgate open in .3 seconds.
I've got a better solution - don't be a dumb ass and let the tailgate drop. Much like the reason I won't be getting a China Raptor grill, I won't be jumping on the bandwagon to get a damped tailgate strut either. At the point where everyone thinks it's the cool thing to do... it's past the point of being the cool thing to do.
