Just curious (and maybe a touch concerned) that my exhaust tip has black soot around the outside of the tip and inside of it. Issue or just normal for a turbo vehicle?

Hi John,

Do you have a Tune on your Ranger?

Best,
Phil

It's been happening to me. Seems to get worse in cold weather. I have soot on the garage floor from the tailpipe and each end of the muffler, which someone on here said has weep holes in it due to direct injection.

I think its normal for turbo vehicles, at least from Ford. My Focus ST did the same thing before and after the tune (obviously a lot worse after since I did a few other things). I wouldn't worry about it. Focus had over 80k of tuned miles and never missed a beat so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Byproducts of burning fossil fuels in the exhaust?

Preposterous!
The Ranger is my 1st vehicle to ever do this . My '07 F-150 with a V8 and over 200k was dry and clean . I'm pretty sure I was burning dead dinosaurs in them also .

My speed 3 did it, my speed 6 did it, my Ranger probably does it but I have a before axle dump exhaust and dont park in a garage so cannot confirm.

I think the moisture created in the exhaust due to the cooler weather traps the soot into ways we can see it more easily than if it just floated away on drier exhaust air. So the moisture with soot drips through the weep hole or collects at the exhaust outlet versus floating off with the breeze.

My older turbo Jetta did the same.
