I put mid-grade (89 octane) in my old 2003 Mountaineer and 93 octane in the 2021 Ranger. I went to gas up the Ranger on Monday and I mistakenly punched the selector for mid-grade and got 3 or so gallons in it before I realized my mistake. Of course you can't just switch the octane selector once you start pumping... so had to close out and start over with the 93. But back to the question, I tend to patronize the Exxon station near my home only because it also is a quick mart that makes the best subs (hoagies)... better than the Subway that's right across the street!

Uh oh!
I'm in trouble!
I ALWAYS go past the auto shut-off point on the nozzle.
Always.
Every time.
And in all seriousness, why should I not?
Why not?
Well, I can only relate what happened to me.
I used to go past the auto-shutoff to squeeze every drop in to fill the tank and round off the pennies. Over time, it became harder to fill the tank because the auto-shutoff would trip every few seconds. I had to go very slow, and it took forever to fill the tank.
I finally had my mechanic look at it. It seems that there was a carbon filter (EPA venting system requirement) in the tank vent system. That filter was saturated with gas and could no longer vent, requiring me to go very slow so it could vent through the fill pipe. It was suspected that when I overfilled the tank all the time, some gas probably got down the vent and got the carbon filter wet.
Who knows?
I will tell you it was not cheap to fix!
So, since then, I stop filling when the auto-shutoff trips.

And I try to use Mobil 93 (to see if the truck REALLY likes it better than the Mobil 87 it used to get).
But, if I need gas when I shop at BJ's, I'll fill it there.
I have to agree with folks that don't think it matters much.

On my Focus once, I was not paying attention to what I was doing, then I saw gas coming out underneath the car. Once it autostops, I listen for the bubbling to stop, squeeze slowly till it stops again, and call it a day.

I try to plan my fill ups at Costco gas most of the time (always cheaper than the street) unless I'm to far from their station then it's any station that's convenient before i run out. I have a bad habit of running the tank to
the low side:oops:

Hey OP: Welcome to the sarcasm jungle!! I pretty much stick to Costco, Shell, or Mobil. 91 octane and yeah, if I am trying to establish fuel economy from a particular brand I will use the same pump and I always stop adding fuel when the auto shutoff activates.
You don’t top off huh?

Yall do realize that it's all the same gasoline, right. The only difference between the high dollar branded gas and "off brand" is the detergent additive.
All gasoline since the mid 90's is required to have detergent additive.
I have been driving a gas tanker for the last 30 years, and it all comes from the same pipe.
Yes, you probably better off getting cheap gas from a place that pumps 5000 gallons a day, than expensive gas from a store that does 500 a day.
In my Ranger, I tend to run unbranded gas, because it tends to get a little better mileage.
I wouldn't want to start a conspiracy rumor that companies will put something in their additive package that might lessen the mileage of people who will only buy their brand.

You're fine Mack. Ask anything you want. You may get some blow back from those that just can't answer a question without imparting their unsolicited wisdom. But that's just the nature of forums. It's usually not intended to belittle anyone.

BTW, welcome to the forum. As you can see we do like to have a little fun at times. :)
Fun is my middle name lol. Just thought it would be interesting ?

I don't believe there is much difference from station to station, as long as they are busy enough to go through the supply frequently. There is a little shopping center near my home that happens to have one of the lowest prices in the Denver Metro area. I'm there at least once a week (grocery, liquor, Walmart) and fill up when needed.

Nope, it always used to lead to evap purge valve failures in the old w-body world.

Habit just sticks with me now. And when paying with a card it doesn't matter if it's an oddball amount.
