Mehhhh......
I'm kind of a "today's gas is still beter than yesterdays gas" kind of guy.
Back when gas was 89¢ a gallon there was a difference in additives and quality between Premium, Mid-Grade, Regular, and Leaded - even if they all came from the same gas station and out of the same gas nozzle. Back then, Premium was more than just octane.
Now gas is more closely regulated and it is of a much higher quality - all gas, even the cheap stuff. And to that point, it is so regulated there are some 14 different fuel blends / packages that get sold in different states / climates at different times of the year. Summer gas from the 7-11 by your house will be different from the gas they sell in the winter - at the same station in the same pump at the same octane.
So saying you have a favorite gas is almost impossible. Which blend from which station in which part of the country in which season?
Generally I prefer Ethanol Free gas from Maverik in the February / March time frame from a station that's above 5,000 feet. I'd like to get it in Premium if they would sell it but they only sell in Regular Octane. I know that isn't "top tier" gas but I see the "top tier" rating much like the JD Power and Associates awards. Sure it is a minimum standard but a majority of gas stations that aren't in the "top tier" still meet or vastly exceed EPA requirements and are just fine. Top tier is just an advertising country club. Anything currently produced that is Ethanol Free, especially in humid climates, is going to be a better fuel than anything that Chevron is putting out and if you like Techron, buy a bottle and dump it in.
Before I had a DI Engine, I use to run a little Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment in the coldest parts of the winter to keep a little lube in the upper engine. Fuel with oil gets in there faster than the thick 10W30 in the crank case does. Now, not really any benefit.
Gas is gas - fil'er up and stomp the skinny pedal.
