It went dark a few weeks back. I am 6 months from the warranty’s term, so scheduled an appointment at the local dealership. Camera came back on, but flickers. Went into the shop today. They updated the software but said the camera needs to be replaced…will be a few weeks for the part to come in. I own a 2020 XLT. Anyone here with similar issue?

@ LoneRNGR, Are you still able to play music without the display? I’m glad there are hard buttons for climate control?

Considering that Ford had a big recall on cameras for other models....this doesn't surprise me at all.
fastest race to the bottom ever, and suppliers hold many of the cards for it.

Yes, on my 2012 Escape. Same as you, the dealer updated the software and told me I needed a new camera.... several weeks delay. It seems the update worked because it worked fine after the update. Canceled the parts, sold the car a couple years later to my son and he has not had any problems.

Yea, mine is starting to fail. Get a warning message and screen goes blue. Happens when driving and then by end of trip it is corrected.

is there maybe a better after market camera, I am sure we would all do that before it fails, I would drop $100 on a good BU camera tomorrow!

My reverse camera is definitely better than the original transmission...

The music plays and I can adjust the volume, but I can't change channels and I can't power off. If I hook up my phone, it will play music, podcast, etc from my phone. I can't adjust any settings or additional climate controls.

I have the same issue with my 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat. Later in 2022, this issue started, just couple thousand kilometers before my warranty expires. This issue comes and goes. Sometimes its good sometimes bad. I brought to Ford dealership to fix, they said the computer module needs to be updated. They updated it for free as it is still within warranty. I thought it's fixed. Few days later, the same issue came back. I brought it back to where I bought the truck. I was told that the updates didn't go through the last time. So I was told I have to leave the truck overnight to complete the update. So I did. The next day I came back and said that the issue is now fixed and should nit happen again. It lasted for I think a month. Then the issue came back again. But the problem is, my warranty expired. I brought back to Ford and I was told that I have to pay for troubleshooting to check what the problem is and pay also the cost to fix it. I didn't take that as I don't want to pay a dime for a problem that I don't think I made. In my opinion it was due to defective module or the camera itself. This is not my first vehicle with backup camera. I have 2015 GMC acadia and the camera is still the same as it was when I bought it in 2015. I drove a company truck for years and the truck is over 5 years and the backup camera never fails. This is the first time I've heard the backup camera failed and on a brand new, couple years old truck. Too bad it happened just 2k km away from the warranty expires.

Just want to know who else has this kind of issue and want to know if there's something they did to fix this. Or would there be any current recall for this type of issue.

Well if it was an active problem during warranty and not solved by the end, I would endeavour to say they still have the responsibility to rectify.

My crashing rearview camera issue ended up being that a previous owner had a caravan camera installed to put on the back of the caravan for reversing. When holding the menu 'ok' button down for 3 seconds, say when resetting trip odometer, that aftermarket module thought you were trying to switch to caravan camera which isn't there , so it throws that error. Hard to know unless you've seen it before.!

Hope this is of help to someone one day.

With it being intermittent and you have no other issues along with it - It is most likely the Camera.
There should be a code generated form the BCM, you can do some Wiring Checks, but more importantly what are you doing to get it to work. --Key Cycle?
The code generated may clear on its own so you would have to scan with the fault present.

The wiring checks for voltage and resistance may not show any discrepancies unless you do a shake test of the harness while doing it.

Optional way to check the wiring, with it faulted, shake the wire harness where it exits the tailgate and down the harness a few feet with a helper watching the display and note if the display of the camera flickers on/off.
Then open the tailgate access panel and shake the harness near the camera connector.
Then move on with a Voltage Check at the camera connector.

Ref: This detailed thread on a similar issue with the camera inoperative.

Lots of wiring details and check for power, the only topic it does not cover is the video feed to the APIM.
