Groo here
I know many use 91/93 with tuners but 91/93 is very pricy here so what do you get with an 87 tune?????

I've been using the Livernois 87-89 performance tune. Haven't had the chance to put many miles on it since loading it but dang it wakes the truck up. The shifts are harder but that is due to not putting enough miles on the tune for the tranny learning. There are many others running these that can chime in.

I'm fly. I'm pilot.
I drive around with my 5star 87 tow/econ tune, ALL THE TIME

I like the way it makes the trans work, especially for launching, and I get ok MPG. I would GUESS that it might add 25hp? Maybe? I want to get mine dyno'd.

I've heard people mention that a transmission needs to learn after getting a tune and never understood that statement. I've had half a dozen handheld tuners and also a handful of my autos have had dyne tunes and not one of the handheld tunes "learned" anything after miles of driving on said tune. My shifts were as hard 10k miles after loading a tune as the first mile after loading a tune unless I adjust the tune by changing shift points on like I could on my handheld SCT for the two 09 G8 GT's I've owned.

It's not that "a" transmission needs to learn after a tune, it's that our transmission on the Ranger needs to learn after a tune or resetting or updating the PCM.

From the Owners Manual:

"Automatic Transmission Adaptive Learning

This feature may increase durability and provide consistent shift feel over the life of your vehicle. A new vehicle or transmission may have firm shifts, soft shifts or both. This operation is considered normal and does not affect function or durability of the transmission. Over time, the adaptive learning process fully updates transmission operation."

It'll definitely smooth out the more miles you put on it. If you run the soft shift tune it'll shift smoother just like being stock. I've had the 91-93 performance tune in for over 6 months now and it shifts a little harsh once in a while but definitely much smoother than when it was first installed.

Groo if you get a Livernois tune you will get all 5 of their tunes.

87-89 soft shift & performance tune
91-93 soft shift and performance tune
tow tune

This way you can try them and see which one works best for you. It only takes about 2-3 minutes to flash between tunes but it's best to leave in on there for a while to get the full affect.

What happens if you put 93 octane when you have a 87 octane tune flashed?

Not recommended as your tailgate damper could overheat. ?

I"m interested in the same goals as the OP. I've consistently run 93 in the truck since emptying the free dealer tank. It's starting to get pricey. I luckily don't drive as much with a new job, but for long trips up the east coast and towing our teardrop I sure would appreciate the cost of 87 octane

I ran the Livernois tuner an I ran the 87-89 tune a few months then put the 91-93 tune in. The low octane tune woke it up an made a noticeable difference....the 93 tune is like a different truck. Right now I go through about a tank a week so 93 costs me about $10 a week. If reg keeps creeping up to near $3 a gallon I might go back to 87-89.

I'm also considering running the low octane tune during the winter blend fuel months
