Our 5th gens may have their share of issues, but at least we’re well into the development curve.

New 6th Gen Rangers have typical first year woes. The GM twins sound like they’ve stumbled upon their fair share of issues.

And now this with the Tacoma…


That video does a great deep dive on a myriad of issues, but even their daggum manual transmission is failing?! The discussion with a Toyota engineer on how they developed parts…

Moments like these I feel as if I confidently tell my wife it’s safe to sink a few grand into aftermarket parts for my 2019 hahah

Really im just shocked to see these developments on the Tacoma. Particularly that the driveline on a Toyota isn’t strong enough to handle the hybrid powertrain with a manual transmission since the engineers can’t tune out the stress a driver may input. They can only do it with the auto transmission. The content creator stating that this sounds like the driveline isn’t over engineered like they used to be is eyebrow raising.

Toyota (as well as many other brands) are not the same company they were 20 years ago - and not in a good way. My guess is the bean counters are overriding the engineers. It is what has caused Boeing so many problems - they used to be an engineer driven company - now they are driven by the bean counters - and it shows.

I didn't think you could get the hypbrid powertrain with a manual transmission. I looked online, and it looks like the I-Force Max is only available with the auto. I can see programming it to deal with the shifting and power spikes of a manual would be a nightmare.

The GM twin issues are mostly coming down to electronical issues on very early 2023 models.

The 2.7 motor has been around for a bit in the Sierra before it was re-worked for the new mid-sizes.

With that said I've had basically zero issues outside of a few miniscule fitment issues on my 23' ZR2. However in about 1 year I have only put 4,000 miles on it. Still smells new.

I should be noted I had similar issues on my 19' Ranger - ie; re-aligning body panels / doors. All relatively simple DIY fixes. Had zero mechanical issues on the Ranger too, but again in about 4 years of ownership I only had 18,000 on it when I traded it in.

I quite literally only use my trucks for recreational use. On the flipside I'm averaging about 5,000 miles a month on my patrol vehicle. lol I get an oil change every 3 weeks.

It's a shame we had solid transmissions across the board until the EPA said "get infinity mpg by year X" which forced 6, 8, 10, etc speed trans which all break. It's not Ranger vs X unfortunately. More like new vs old, old being the winner.

I remember a common saying with old cars like the Miata was get the 5sp manual not the 6sp, because the 6 has smaller gears jammed into the same housing so is weaker. But a 10 speed surely will be fine.

The Colorado trans was a joint effort between Ford and Chevy and they both break down. The have a class-action for the Chevy trans as well as the Ford.

Chevrolet is facing multiple class action suits regarding Chevrolet Colorado
models from 2017 to 2024 regarding transmission problems among other issues.

I've not watched the referenced youtube video nor the one with the link below that purports to clarify the new Taco issues , IMO just more internet bs just like TFL crappola, like the Ford tech Mackapoloo and countless other crap that has become synonymous with the internet today. But a lot of people thrive on this sort of thing, just consider the viewership that FOX News continues to enjoy. Oh yeah I picked up a nail in my tire 2 days ago, so it must be because Ford makes crap and my Ranger is junk, gotta blend in with the crowd.

Oh it was the 6 and 10 together, not the 8. But the 8 has problems too according to the article I read.

Last thursday i went to fix a flat on my passenger front, and the dude at discount tire found a flat on my driver rear!!!!!!! I got them fixed for free but sheeesh, i should have bought a ridgeline! Ford needs to do better.

There is some stellar reading out there in the 8-speed lawsuit. GM knew that trans was a turd before they even launched it, but they went ahead full send and have been absolutely bleeding ever since.

The 'Gen 2' of it will probably be a solid unit, but they've just launched that in the last year or so.

And yes, the "8L's" are all GM, no Ford involvement with that one.
