I stumbled on an ad for this, or more likely, it found me through all my Googling.

I thought it was an interesting idea and wondered if anyone here had any experience using one and what their thoughts were? I wouldn’t want to rely on it completely and run into a dead battery situation, but it might be handy to have one around. I carry a torque wrench in my truck but not everyone does. Plus, I like gadgets. ?

This is the best kind of electronic torque wrench...assembly lines use corded versions...

I use digital torque wrenches often. All calibrated for my work.
would be interesting to know how accurate this would be, and if it can be calibrated successfully.
I can see some instances in my work where this could be handy.

Thanks to being a Mechanic for over 9 years I have built a fair collection of tools. In those tools you will find 3 different Torque Wrenches. One 3/8 and two 1/2 drives. The 3/8 and one 1/2 drive is digital. It has a nice read out and does the torque to yield bolts. If memory serves me right each one cost me $400. Would you believe they also have a vibrator function?! Sorry, reach around not included.

As for my other 1/2 drive, it is a mechanical torsen type. That was also $400.


Now you ask why i spent so much? Well I use my tools on a daily basis for work. Certain tools wont hold up to what i deal with and that is why.

I have this one at my disposal. I didnt have to foot the bill though, the company did.
Thankfully I am man enough, sans damper, to actually use it to its max value without hurting myself.

I have this exact one. Picked it up at Harbor Freight. Fairly inexpensive and gets pretty decent reviews. Seems to be pretty accurate against my standard torque wrench. Use it primarily for lug nuts.

I cannot put much more than ~250 ft-lbs on my own wrenches. After that and I fear tearing my hernia repair

Although it does look like that wrench has an extension to the handle which probably helps..

FWIW, Hot Rod Magazine did a test on torque wrenches including that Harbor Freight unit. They tested the accuracy and the repeatability over time.

The Harbor Freight unit was the most accurate and was the most repeatable over time of the units they tested which included some high end units from the likes of Snap-On.

FYI, the worst thing you can do to one of the click type torque wrenches is not turn it back down to zero when you are done using. This type of wrench works by loading a spring and over time the spring can/will take a set so when set to a torque you will actually be applying less torque.

I have never used one like this but use Torque Wrenches all the time on aircraft as even a simple panel screw has a specific torque spec but automotive, they tend to be only used for Lugnuts and Engine parts such as intake heads etc -I always cussed when I got the last a-hole who over torqued the water pump bolts and they break getting them out. They think the tighter the better
It's better known in the mechanics world as - German Torque (GoodNTight)

I've seen those an they won't work for tight areas. I thought they were more for checking you regular torque wrenches.

Project Farm uses these a lot for his testing. He also tested the regular style torque wrenches.
