I'm away for work right now but I fly home tomorrow. When I get home I will upload a video to the thread but I thought I would get this posted early to capture some user insight. Here is the issue and the conditions to replicate:

Symptom: Clattering noise. Similar to a rod bearing knock or piston slap type of metallic clatter noise

1. At operating temperature
2. light to moderate throttle application
3. Just before engine shifts from 1st to 2nd, over 2700rpm (It happens in other gears, this is just where I hear it the most)

I've had the truck since July and its been making this noise since. I bought it used, it still has powertrain warranty for another thousand miles (I have an extended through a third party thereafter, but I want to catch this under OEM powertrain wty if I can)

It will not produce the noise if the engine is not loaded. If youre in park and you just rev the engine, it will not do it. Must be loaded. I had the shop foreman of my local dealer take it for a spin and he claims he did not hear anything. I was again out of town for work and left it with them, so I spent $135.00 for a half hour of no-fault found diagnostics.

Do any of you hear a noise that can be explained with these conditions? Again I will post a video tomorrow when I am back home.

Going by your description, especially the “under load” portion sure sounds like a rod! I certainly hope I’m wrong too! Do you know the history of the truck?

That is exactly my concern. I left it with the dealer for a separate issue; I have been topping up the coolant once every couple of months since I bought the truck but asked their foreman to road test the truck. They no faulted the diag for both issues, claiming they did a pressure test for 30 minutes and found no leaks, and did not hear a noise when driving.

I was kind of frustrated, because a coolant intrusion diag on the Head/Head Gasket recall for the 2.3L Focus RS went overnight on a pressure test. I dont believe that 30 minutes can be enough time. While I am away for work, I have found a used ranger for sale by a dealership, and they have graciously allowed me to take it for a spin to see if it has this noise too.

With only 1200km left before my powertrain is up, the clock is ticking and I need my truck for work to travel when I don't fly.

Have you changed the oil since you purchased the truck? The reason I ask is because I bought my '19, used with 20k on it from a Ford dealership who put fresh oil in it. With the hood up and the truck idling I noticed a rattle/clattering sound from the engine's top end, sounded like a sewing machine. Never though too much about it just though it was normal.....but when I changed the oil the sound all went away and purrs like a kitten now.

I have done 2 oil changes on it now. At the time of sale it had 77,000km on the odometer. I did the first oil change at 81,000 (it had gone 6 months since the dealer did the recon on it, so I wanted fresh oil in it). I used Castrol Edge 5w-30 synthetic and a ford FL-910 Filter. Then I did the second one at 90,000km, Using Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 Synthetic and the Ford FL-910 filter. I am at 98 now and am due for another oil change here right away, the noise is present regardless of if the oil is new or due for servicing.

It is probably the high pressure fuel pump clattering. They do it under load like that. Especially noticed when it is cooler outside. You won't hear it as much in the summer.

There's a big thread here somewhere about it.

I flew back home yesterday evening and tried to get a video of the noise, it doesnt really get picked up by the mic in my phone. However after reading this thread I believe now that it may just be normal. Someone there commented about it sounding almost "diesel" like, and in retrospect I think thats the perfect way of describing what I am hearing.

I work in the automotive industry, and have a couple of connections at a dealer with a used Ranger in stock. I took it for a spin this morning and sure enough, exact same noise.

Makes me feel much better knowing that my engine isn't about to send a rod out the block but also disappointed that this configuration is so noisy. Not even remotely close in terms of noise levels inside the Focus RS. I also then feel better about the no-fault found diag charges. (They took the time to look at it, they deserve to be paid for it).

I think I will grab that engine cover/insulator to help with the noise as well as protecting the injectors and spark plug tubes from water intrusion.

Evening, yall!

I emailed my Ford store to ask them to price out the engine cover, studs and nuts. I gave him the part numbers, said I was aware it likely wont list it under my vin and wanted it anyways. Heres the part numbers I gave him, found in the engine cover thread:

Cover - L1MZ - 6A949 - C
Stud - W714647-S450B (2 Required)
Nut - W520201-S450B (2 Required)

This is what he told me:

"
According to our catalogue that cover only fits the 2.3L engine built up to 12/07/2020

this one was built on 08/20/2021 so it looks like it will not work. There is no engine cover available for this vehicle unfortunately"

Any insight?

First - If looking this part by VIN# it will never show effective or that it fits.
It only comes with the Lariat Trims so it must be ordered as if you have a Lariat or select Do not use my VIN when ordering.

The cover does help some in quieting down the sewing machine sound - but not much, what really helped mine was the HP Pump cover, which I added just for curiosity as the noise was not that much of an issue.
With both covers - I never really hear it anymore, so the added HP Pump cover cuts the noise down greatly.

As far as water protection, although I have not had that issue, the Engine Cover really does nothing for that as the water still drips down to the side of the cover.
The HP Pump cover is the one that really does more to address that issue for #4 plug well.
But again, I do not have any issues with the water, so I cannot confirm how effective it truly is for the water issues but can confirm it will quiet down the HP Pump noise (sewing machine) by approximately 80%.

The Part Number for the (Engine Appearance Cover) has changed a few times

This is what I believe is the current PN: L1MZ-6A949-AA

This cover will fit (ALL) 5th Gen Ranger 2.3 Engines.
