A strange moment today, here goes: I have a 2020 Ford Ranger XL. I have had no issues of any kind on 4 1/2 years of ownership so I am very pleased with this truck. About 2 months ago I decided it was time to put in a new battery because I noticed it was going into "sleep" mode regularly. That's typically a sign that the battery is in its final chapter. Also with winter approaching I assumed it was a good idea. I put in an Interstate Battery and all is well...until today. I parked it at church this morning and as I pressed the lock on my key fob didn't hear it lock. I didn't think much of it until when I returned an hour later I couldn't unlock the door with the fob. I them popped open the standard key and unlocked the door manually. (Assuming the fob battery was dead). I put the key in the ignition and NOTHING. No dash lights. No sounds. I have a portable jump starter and put it on the battery. Once again turned the key. NOTHING. Not a sound. I got a ride home and called a tow truck. They were unable to come for 3 hours. I decided to go back an hour later and try one more time. It started up no problem. The key fob locked and unlocked the doors. Everything is working again...but I don't trust it at all. Any theories about what is wrong here?

IdahoRanger thanks for the reply and for taking the time to search for the thread from "airline tech" (I think that's his user name). About 5 paragraphs into his extensive post I realized that guy is well above my pay grade and decided I'd rather trade in my Ranger than read that entire posting, ha. Anyway here's hoping that my failure to launch this morning was a rare and potentially unlikely future event. I'll bring it to my friendly Ford dealer this week just the same and have them hook it up to the diagnostic computer just to confirm there are no codes, and cross my fingers that it never happens again.

There have been a few on here that have had the same event. Then it starts fine and never happens again, go figure. I hope it is all over for you.

Regarding airlinetech's thread... scroll down to the bottom of his post where he has two updates... you only need the latest one. Tells the likely cause, and how to "trick" it into resetting the "stuff" that is causing the problem rather than waiting 10 minutes to reset itself.

Yes, it is heavy reading but glad we have a fellow like him that can figure this stuff out!!

That has happened to me twice!

Once at about 50 miles and again at about 500. It has never happened since

Glitch in the matrix i guess.

Ranger19ca, I appreciate your empathic message and take solace that a couple of thoughtful people have weighed in with a pretty solid assurance that this is likely an isolated incident. Thanks for your post.

I'm pleased it didn't also happen to you at 5000 and 50,000...at that point I'd say "I think I see a pattern here!"

Yeah but the next step would be 500 000 miles so I think he'd be safe ?

Did you reset the BMS when you changed the battery? If not you might see it acting screwy again in another month or so. I'd never owned a vehicle with a Battery Management System before my 2020 ranger so I didn't know about it and saw what you did and let it go. If you don't reset it then it will mess with the computer and you'll see different problems. My biggest one was when you'd turn off the truck all power would immediately die and you couldn't restart. Have to disconnect/reconnect the battery to reset so I could make it home or elsewhere.

Reset steps on youtube.
