Hi Ben,

Yep...it is IVD taking over. Interactive Vehicle Dynamics. A fellow I knew in racing was and still is part of the Ford IVD development. He visited me here in Green Valley, driving down from Ford Phoenix test track in an advanced Protorype. We were reviewing the prototype and I saw this huge "goiter" in the steering intermediate shaft.. WTF is that I questioned him. He told me that was the steering disconnect that would disconnect the driver and the steering wheel from the vehicle when the vehicle thought the driver was not able to handle the vehicle to prevent a crash... !!!!!! No (F*ingway,) I told him..I would never buy a vehicle with such a feature...Well...Now with electric steering the "goiter" is not required...the car can take over the electric steering if programed to do so.... I cannot tell you if this in the current Ranger or not....Brake applied is certainly part of the current 5G Ranger!

Phil,

Would this feature be different in 4x4 vs. 4x2?

Hi Rene,

I would suspect the calibration parameters would be unique for 4x2 vs 4x4 but the overalll system strategy would likely be the same..if that makes sense...the electric steering take over is likely not part of 5G...I really do not know if if is even possible. My friend will be down here in mid January and I plan to ask him....he retired at the end of 2020...

LOL, totally unrelated to this thread, but when I test drove a 2019 Taco 4x4 I honestly thought it had a 4 cyl. under the hood and I told the salesperson this (it had the 3.5 V6).
Another Honda CR-V I owned then, which was a 1999 4x2 with 200K miles would honestly beat the Taco off the line.
How Toyota buyers can put up with such a lethargic engine is baffling, not to mention the engine wanting to do this and the transmission wanting to do otherwise.

I no longer yearn for highest lap-speeds and such, so I LOVE all this safety software. When people say "they don't build them like they used to", I reply "thank God".

Even with traction control off the stability control will still engage when it detects excessive body roll. Ask me how I know, lol. I take mine off road hunting each weekend. I have felt it engage and take control when power sliding on the dirt roads and getting a bit too aggressive. I love this truck off road!! Runs circles around my old Tacoma.
correct me if I'm wrong I think stability control turns off in 4 low. But ya no way to turn it off manually. Sometimes my inner teenager comes out in an icy parking lot and even with traction control off it doesn't slide around like my older trucks did. The first time I tried it was quite anti-climatic....I do appreciate the safety features though. My first 10 minutes from the dealer it saved me from a guy with no brake lights.

To turn off stability control, press and hold the traction control button for 5-10 seconds. You'll see the TC Off screen, and then a few seconds later, the AdvanceTrac Off screen and the TC light will flash in acknowledgement.

Lock the diff if you have one and let 'er rip! Crappy phone video screenshot for proof ;)

thank you good sir that is some great information! Sweet truck too! The locker irritates me as it unlocks if your tires are spinning faster than 30 mph. I know it does it for protection from damage but it's too bad because its hard to spin around in a field with posi because it's so easy to spin faster than 30 mph. I really don't see spinning faster than 30mph as a damage potential anyway unless you are a complete idiot and go from spinning on ice to a dry patch of asphalt or if the truck is physically going over 30 and your turning on a semi-hard or hard surface. Engineers know best I suppose....

random story... When i was in the Army in Georgia there was this sergeant who thought his Nissan Titan was the greatest thing ever. He got stuck in this mud hole that had a steep 6 foot incline on each side and pavement at the top of each side. He forgot to shift from reverse to forward when someone pulled him out and as the truck was being pulled out forward he was revving the hell out of it in reverse which as to getting out made little difference because he was getting zero traction but when the truck came up over the embankment the front tires went airborne for a split second and he didn't let of the gas so then spun even faster and when the front tires came down on that pavement the front differential literally exploded! half of a ring gear landed not 3 feet from me it was F*cking EPIC! I wish I had saved that chunk of gear for a souvenir!
