Hats off to everyone changing transmission fluid miles before the 100000 to 150000 miles ford recommend unless you plan to sell before that. I think 300 to 400 dollars every 40000 to 50000 miles sounds better than a 6000 to 7000 dollar transmission. I keep vehicles normally for 200000 plus miles and have never had a transmission issue.
Not hard to do, and using Ford parts through Rock Auto it can be done for under $150 including gasket. Less then $100 when reusing gasket only fluid and filter. If done early and regularly a flush is not really needed. Always a chance to cause more issues with a full flush.

Hey all,

Just went to a mom and pop shop today and was quoted $650 for a full transmission fluid/filter replacement.

Did my research here (and even asked Gemini AI) and found that that seems kinda high. I called the dealership and (surprisingly) was quoted $359 for the same job. I asked “is that with filter replacement as well” and they said yes… but I dunno. Maybe that doesn’t include labor?

Can you help me figure out what a reasonable price should be?

I’m in the Los Angeles area.

Thank you!
replace vs flush is often the confusion. $359 for fluid, filter and labor for exchange is in the ball park

Just paid around $500. Unique situation. I had gear oil, filter, seal, gasket and PPE pan lined up - sitting in the garage. I was holding off because I wanted to maintain my warranty. At 73k miles it’s shifting so nice now. They did a full BG flush and installed everything with 12 qts. Diffs and transfer case were flushed and filled too.

I’m planning on hanging onto this truck for the long haul - I plan to drain and fill after another 25k at 100k with some Amsoil in the diffs…I have to do my research on what to put in the transmission if not Motorcraft.

Once you've invested in MBS dipstick and PPE sump, fluid change is way more fun and cheaper than an expensive date with the dealership...

Agree,ANYTHING, to stay away from the dealership. You just never know what you are getting or not getting from them.

I’m with you guys. I usually handle maintenance myself. I figured have them do the high pressure flushes at 70k (would have preferred 50k, but time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping…into the future) and I’ll follow up with routine drain and fills moving forward. We bought it with 28k and a solid warranty. But, I’d like to see 200k+.

Thanks for all the great advice/suggestions/info!

As much as I wanted to stay away from the dealer (and yes, I don’t fully trust them either), I wanted the ease and convenience of just having them do it. It seemed like too much of a tough job for a somewhat novice like me.

I got a simple drain and fill (the guy at the dealer said I shouldn’t have to change the filter at 56k, which surprised me that he wasn’t trying to upsell me, but also made me wonder why…) and it was $359 plus tax.

I drive like an old man and don’t drive a lot since I commute to work on my bike, so I’m hoping a drain and fill was enough.
