I have run mine out of gas, and coasted in on fumes a few times. Once you put a little more fuel in the tank it just keeps on keeping on.
That works well with beans also.....just eat a few and you'll be putt putting in no time

I have driven mine past the point of zero. It held like 18.6 gallons.

Doesn't count, I want to see a complete stall due to zero fuel.
Having a diesel I'll stop before dry. I'd guess Ford has automatic air removal of diesel rigs, but that might not always work. And air removal by hand is more pain than putting thumb up beside the road.

I always heard that running out of fuel is hard on the high pressure fuel pump and can cause it to fail.
Seen a Scanner Danner video where they were working on a ford that a high pressure pump that ended up sending metal into the injectors and back in to the low pressure line.
If I remember right they ended up replacing all the injectors and the high pressure pump, and had to flush the low pressure line.

So who's first to try

Agree....everything I've read/heard indicates running out may cause the pump to overheat and fail, or, pump air into the lines, or, pick up any "stuff" from the tank bottom and send it thru the lines, causing the injectors to fail.....or any combination..
So, if any of you do go for it, let us know what the repairs, if any, cost.

Totally agree, having had to bleed numerous diesel tractor fuel systems, I would not want anyone to purposely run their diesel tank dry.

None of those things happened. Nothing to repair.

The list of things that may go wrong every time you leave the garage is a long one.

Yes, the in tank fuel pump is cooled as well as lubricated by the additives in gasoline. they are not made to operate dry, they also have a (sock-filter) on the inlet side of the pump to (HELP) block any debris from entering the pump and fuel lines, however any dirt and debris will more easily find its way to the suction (inlet) port and block off the fuel supply when the fuel level is low.

I’ve heard something similar - that the fuel pump in the gas tank is cooled by the gas in the tank and that running the tank too low can cause big problems.

Is it true or BS? I don’t know but I don’t want to find out.

My truck warns me at 80km remaining and again at 40km. That’s plenty of time for me to do something about it.

That should be all you need but if you’re often in the middle of nowhere, carry a can of gas in the back and make sure you have that little funnel on board.
We just completed a 11,000+ mile trip around the US. Because we were pulling a 3500lb trailer and getting 10-12mpg gas was an issue. In some areas gas stations are few and far between. 18 gallons doesn't get you very far. We ran out of gas twice. Once in the Florida everglades where there was no cell service for our navigation and we got lost. The truck never actually quit running and I pulled over when the the message said zero miles to empty. Used the extra gas can I had for the generator fuel. The second time was between N. Dakota and Minnesota. Truck said zero miles to empty but the highway sign said 4 miles to next exit. The truck never quit running but it took 19.5 gallons to fill the 18 gallon tank!

I came close on a trip to PEI a little while back.

Between my phone’s GPS and the Ranger’s on-board computer, I knew I could make it to the exit that had a gas station.

Tells you how bad Ford doesn't want you to run out of gas. They give you an extra unknown reserve:wink:
