On a 2021 supercab (XLT), I don't see how to remove the back headrests.
The buttons allow the headrests to slide up and down, but the headrest hits the ceiling before the rods leave the seat...so I can't pull it out.

How are they removed?
There's probably an obvious way to do this :D, but i don't see it in the manual either.

Under the head rest is a small flap in the seat cover. raise the flap exposing the car seat anchor and a single bolt. loosen the bolt. pull the seat back forward, then raise and remove the head rest. push the seat back back. reinstall the bolt. Have a nice day. Drink your favorite beverage. your are complete with the project.

Ah, got it. Thanksm I appreciate the instructions:)

I'd read a few posts on here about that bolt, but, I didn't realize it was connected to the headrest :D
(I thought it was about removing the seat)

I've got a 2021 XL trim Supercab...and mine just seem to come out. I agree...they hit the headliner when in the full up position...but I just "compress" them a little bit and there is enough room to pull them out. I do it quite often to clean rear window. Unless..... are XL trim seats slightly different than XLT ones ???

There was a recall for some Supercabs for the rear headrests because they interfered with the ability to install child seats. The fix included replacement headrests which I believe can be flipped down. Check out your vehicle to see if is affected.

NHTSA campaign numbers: 21V765. Ford’s number for this recall is 21C24.

I got the recall notice and the "Congratulations on your new Ford!" letter almost the same day. @Larrykime,s method is the way Ford instructions read. It's a moot point , anyway. You cannot install a Child Safety Seat in the rear of a Supercab properly, no matter what. The seat cushion is not long enough to fasten the either its own strap to the LATCH anchors or the cab's seatbelt so that the CSS backrest in in the proper position. The booster seats are ok. I keep my rear headrests in a plastic bag in our storage area.

This. On my 2021 XL the rear headrests just fold forward (you may have to push a button, I forget) and give you the clearance to lift the headrest up and off. Trust me the view is much better without them!

I don't think so. I can get mine out on a lariat, but it takes a little persuasion.
I don't think all Rangers (Screw and Scab) have folding headrests. I know for my '22 scab, many did not, but mine did for some reason.

Those that don't have the folding button can still fold them down by pushing deeply at the button spot. The hinge lock is still there, under the upholstery, but Ford cheaped out and didn't install the outer button on many.

There's a post on here that shows how to add a piece of dowel to it to make it work more easily.

Weird stuff ...

Ah yes, you're right. I have the folding ones.. duh. Originally mine did not fold, but had the mechanism, and a quick 'dowel rod mod' turned them into folding units. They were replaced with the recall, and I had removed them before taking it in and the dealer didn't ask for them back. I ended up sending the old ones to another member.

The folding mechanism was removed on the newer model headrests, but if you're lucky you still have the folding bits hidden inside. When I did mine, I added the dowel but left it hidden inside the upholstery, so you just had to feel for it to get it to fold, but no big deal.

This is the thread you were talking about. @jss81258 added the dowel and there's pictures detailing how he did it. I took the rear headrest (along with most of the deleted items) from my '19 when it was totaled so mine look original. lol

Totally agree! Mine come right off in my super crew, I just put them behind the seat in the rare instance I need them. Really opens up the view.

I forgot about that recall....I have been getting notices about it since the truck was practically new. I have had it over to the Ford dealer several times about it and not really gotten much information. All I have learned is that it has "something to do " with the rear headrests and the ability to install child seats properly. I would go over to the dealer....ask them about this recall.. and find out if it includes replacement headrests, possibly ones that are smaller. You should be eligible for this upgrade. but....as some of the guys have mentioned... if you can get them out, I would leave them out. The SuperCab is NOT an ideal setup for rear/side vision with those things installed.
