I don't know if it's the nature of the beast, so to say, now that my 2021 Ranger XLT 4x4 with 17, 250 miles on it... I've been experiencing this issue the last few weeks off and on (mostly on). For example today, 28 degrees F out, sunny, I remote started the truck around 10:45 a.m. and let it run about 4 minutes. When I put it in reverse to start exiting my driveway, backing out on the level about 40' it's fine. Soon as I get on the paved lane in front of my house, which has a slight incline uphill and put the truck in Drive, it doesn't go, like lurches in place. I tried putting in reverse to let it roll back a couple inches then but back in Drive, still the same thing. I have to do this about 3 times before it will move forward in Drive. Doesn't do it at any other time or any other place.

So I have an appointment at my Ford dealer where I bought the truck for next Wednesday for "the works" oil change and yearly state inspection. I know they won't re able to replicate the problem when I get the truck there (about a 30 minute drive). Do I just ask them to check and see if it's throwing any codes??
(Before anyone comes at me saying "duh", I'm an older lady who doesn't know a lot about the mechanics.) Oh, I do have the Ford extended warranty which ends April 2029 or 75,000 miles.
If you’re having any shifting issues at all ( even minor) then they are supposed to diagnose them under TSB 24-2101. It doesn’t require codes to be present but they do check for them as part of the diagnosis. I’ve attached a copy of it for you to read through and familiarize yourself with. It wouldn’t hurt to mention the TSB to them so they know you’re aware of it.

Thank you so much, I'll print it out and take with me to the appointment next week!

It's bad enough where it is doing it as it is, so far hasn't done it when I'm anywhere else... I just can't figure out the common denominator that's causing it. Goes fine in reverse backing out of the driveway, then as I'm sitting in the road facing uphill on a slight incline, I put in Drive and that's when it occurs. No snow or ice on the road, it should go forward! Now that I think about it though, when we did have snow on the road up until a few days ago, and I had it in 4x4, it never did it. I would go out in left field and guess the tires weren't grabbing on the paved road if it had happened anytime before in those almost 4 years I've owned the truck, but it started fairly recently. My tires look to have good tread still at 17,250 miles on them.
Not a solution to your issues, but from a safety standpoint, are you able to back in your driveway? So you can just pull out and go?

For the time being I could I suppose but it's going to be inconvenient because I'm in and out so often daily going back and forth where my horses are kept (at least 4 times per day). Our drive way is curved so it kinda hard to explain how it meets the road.

To get a video of what's happening back up a ways in your driveway then pull forward while still in the driveway. That way your safe from getting hit out on the street.

I've never had it happen on our level driveway but then I don't usually stop while in reverse and try to pull forward while in the driveway.... so I will try that tomorrow morning and see if it does the same thing as when I'm out in the road on an incline.

It seems that everyones' tranny failure symptoms vary...if its acting up one way or another, subtle or brutal...it usually ends up going down hill and in the end, fixed one way or another...either you pay or your insurance pays for a replacement...sad...

Glad I have 4 more years left with the extended warranty or 75,000 miles (which ever comes first).

It still could be the battery, but I would have them check the transmission?

I had a new battery put in this past Fall. Not getting any alerts for checking charging system.

First thing I would check is fluid level, which is damn near impossible to do properly with the OEM dipstick.
I looked for that aftermarket dipstick, but it was out of stock. Maybe they will get more made up soon. I sure want to get one.

It is definitely a high demand item. It is so well built and proven. Hope you are able to obtain one soon.
