Sharing the technical details below, but I just picked my truck up on Friday from the dealership. It was in for 2 weeks. I brought it in with about 6 months / a few thousand miles left on my power train warranty. CDF drum slipping appeared to be the issue.

My truck drives/shifts buttery smooth now. Before bringing it in, I did replace the EGR sensor and that did nothing to fix my crazy shifting / over reving before shifting / searching for gears / bucking issue.

$8,000 job covered by ford. I still want to drive this thing into the ground, no midsized truck drives better than these rangers. I just wish some of these issues weren’t as apparently prevalent. It is what it is!

Glad to see they covered it and you just made it in before the warranty ended. My luck it would've happened 6 months after the warranty just ended that's why I bought the 10/100K ESP. ?‍♂ You're right, these trucks are great and I love the way they drive and handle and are just a perfect all around mid size truck! FFR! ?

Same situation here. I Iove the truck, but at 40k miles I’d think there would be a lot less issues with the transmission.

Good thing I am covered by Ford Protect another 8 years and 135k miles (the longest plan), so I’m hoping that’s it with my truck’s 10R80 issues!

Both these guys seem to have a decent dealer that really delves into the problem without the common "cannot duplicate issue" excuse.

I appreciate the replies and feel compelled to add...

As much as I love this truck, there’s something that really frustrates me as a truck guy. As a consumer, there’s no reliable way to gauge how widespread this trans issue actually is. You can dig through reviews and forums all you want, but there’s no definitive way to know how often these transmissions are failing.

Multiple owners on this forum have over 100k/200k miles with no issues, while others make it sound like a transmission failure is inevitable. And honestly, it’s the same story on any Frontier or Tacoma forum. No reliable source of information, just vague reports.

In the end, it feels like all we can do is rely on the truck’s overall reputation and the reputation of the dealership we’re working with.

I changed my fluid at under 2 years / 30,000 miles and it made zero difference. The last tear down the shop said the fluid was not the issue.
That doesn't mean it can't help prevent other issues. There are multiple issues in the 10R80 battle, some can be helped by fluid, others cannot. You're not guaranteed which one you might or might not get, but there is really only one thing we have in our control to at least try and prevent issues and that is keeping the valve body and solenoids clean and moving freely.

Not to mention all the 10R80's in other vehicles.

Had my transmission replaced under warranty at 59k, same symptoms as many here have mentioned. EGR was replaced by me months before it went in as I thought that may have been the issue. I now I have about 7k on the new transmission, 67k on the truck, and while it's better once up to speed it still bucks at times during low speeds and low rpm in slow traffic. I really believe the stock transmission program is to blame for this, increase the shift rpm 500 and I think it would solve most of our issues. The Mechanic that did mine said Ford should of put their after market tuner program in these trucks from the start, shifting is much improved he stated. I had thought about buying a Ford Tuner, but after dealing with other issues I've had with this truck, injector, brake discs, blend door, I've had enough, not gonna dump anther dollar into this thing. Funny thing, now I drive around town in tow/haul mode and have not felt any of the symptom's mentioned above. I do have a an extended warranty out to 125k, and I have no doubt I'll be using every bit of it. Sad!

Glad they took care of it. Hoping if I have a trans issues it happens under warranty too. My engine was just replaced for a rod bearing issue at 50k miles but that seems SUPER rare. During those 7 weeks I started to consider other trucks and agree, nothing is like these 5g Rangers.

I even went to a GMC dealer to sit in a Canyon and the seats didn't feel as good. I'm sure the 6g Ranger would be as close as it gets but the new Ford Sync and controls I consider a downgrade for me personally. That and I still don't love the front end.

I just got the Ford Performance Tune....I felt the EXACT same way as you.

My truck has been repaired under warranty 4 times for 3 different issues (I'm just under 60k miles but had my first issue the day after I bought it) - which Ford extended for me due to my first hassle with the warranty repair.

If you're gonna keep the truck, and you're under warranty, get the Ford Tune. There are still a few awkward shifts...but it's SIGNIFICANTLY smoother and extra hp feels amazing.

Thanks. Think it may be inevitable...?

Man, I should call Ford and see if they will extend my extended warranty. Mine is up at 100k but at 50k they did the motor, had the truck 7 weeks. Then after 1.5 weeks with it I take it back when I realized the clunk I felt was them leaving the trans mount unbolted. Might make for a good case for them to extend it since it is all freshly done.

Driving it today with the trans bolted up feels great again though. I have basically only driven in Tow/Haul or Sport mode since the day I got it. The stock Drive profile is horrible. Plus T/H also shuts off the auto off feature. I recently used Forscan to disable auto off but the drive profile is so bad, I just remembered why I never used it. 30mph through my residential and it tried to put me in 7th gear. I think T/H leaves me in 5th which is perfect.

I think I may go for the Ford tune this time around. I also hear MPG gets better with it too? Since I tow a few times a year (in Vegas summer too) I wouldn't consider any other tune.
