Anyone had their transmission simply not respond for a longtime, when flooring it?
I was on the highway recently, and was merging into traffic from a near-standstill (as is normal).
I was half out of my lane, with high-speed traffic in the lane I was merging into, and floored it while in D mode to merge into the lane.
Simply nothing happened for SEVERAL SECONDS(like 3 seconds). It seems like I lost all wheel power. Not even slow movement while turbo spun up -- simply 0 power.

After those few seconds, the vehicle finally started accelerating. I didn't move my foot so no, I hadn't been accidentally pressing the brake :p

Anyone had this before?
Is this a transmission issue? Engine issue? Either way it was extremely unsafe.

When mine did it the trans crapped out a while ago. Or I should say transmission like the transmission (not trans) guy said at the dealership.

You have to ease into the throttle, the issue you had was Turbo Lag, building enough exhaust pressure to spin the turbo has a few second delay when going full throttle (all at once)

Mine will do that sometimes, but I have found that if I put it in Sport mode at stops or when merging into traffic it helps a lot .Then when up to seep just put it back in drive.

Most drive by wire vehicles for some reason seem to have a little bit of lag built in. I don't know why, maybe it's a "safety" feature to stop them jumping away if you accidentally bump the throttle, maybe it's designed as a soft start to make life easier on the driveline. I do know, it can be extremely annoying at times, combine it with turbo lag and you have a double whammy effect. It's even worse on my diesel model, diesels being naturally a little bit slower to spin up. I find a steady push to the floor often responds much faster than suddenly slamming it down.

The last automatic transmission I drove that immediately downshifted was a Poweglide.
With ten speeds trying to keep the motor in optimum fuel milage mode, It doesn't respond well to sudden max inputs. I find that taking ~1 second to floor it works a treat.

As I was driving, I put it into sport. It was way worse -- very unreliable and far more laggy. (It didn't use to be that way)

No, it wasn't turbo lag. With turbo lag there's still some power until it kicks in. This was literally 0 power for 3-4 seconds. It's not like any other turbo lag i've ever encountered, and i've floored it for merging countless times (so know what the lag is like).

This wasn't the normal lag. I'm familiar with the normal lag, but this was like the engine or tranny just died completely. I've never had this issue before since purchasing the vehicle.

What you're describing is not normal...I'd take it in asap...have you checked your trans fluid level? I'm betting it's low...

If you haven't checked, google "ranger5g how to check trans fluid level"...

Was the engine racing (high RPMs during the 3 second period? If so, it isn't an engine problem. If not, what gear was the transmission in?

Those were the days, combined with something like a 4 barrel Holley you could really give something a kick in the pants!

So now it's up to 4 seconds? I am sure it was less than 3, time flies when shit is hitting the fan. But yeah, what was the engine RPM during this 3 to 15 second delay?

In that case could be sign of something more serious - I hope not for you. Sometimes these highly computerised cars just do strange things out of the blue.
