On the way home from an unsuccessful deer hunting trek this evening, hit a fawn. Luckily there was little to no damage based on a quick flash light inspection. Even the air dam seems intact. The sound is part strike and part anti-lock brakes. I hope this satisfies the Ranger's lifetime deer hit requirement! But living in Va, I doubt it.

Glad to hear you're ok. Is it too soon to ask about Bambi? Did you go home "empty-handed" after the hunting trip? Or did your buddy pick up a freshly hit fawn and take it home?

I turned around to see if I could find it, no luck. It looked like it kicked up some gravel before heading into the woods. So yeah, went home empty handed.

Be very thankful it wasn't a Moose or Elk. Given their long legs, they may end up in the front seat and damage to your vehicle is the least of your worries. I've hit an Pronghorn ($2,500) and a deer ($1,000). Car (truck) hunting is just too expensive.

Ah, I thought I’d ask. I always thought it was dumb that if you hit a deer, that you couldn’t take it home as some sort of compensation for the heavy repair bill that it may have caused the vehicle.

Depends on how bad they're hit, the meat might be all blood shot.

I'm in VA as well. Guy I worked with hit a deer on the interstate. Two weeks after getting his truck back he hit another one. I decided to get a ARB bumper as a replacement after someone backing into me at work. Thankfully I've only had bird strikes with the new bumper. So I guess it works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most people use a rifle, bow, etc..... Those skilled among us use trucks and cars (sometimes even motorcycles), its getting them up in a deer stand that is the hard part.

Many western states allow a Deer/Elk/Moose killed by a vehicle to be taken home for personal consumption, but check with your state's DNR because not all states subscribe to that rule. And just like a gun shot animal, it needs to be butchered immediately and meat cooled right away. And as James states, depending upon how badly the animal is hit it may not be worth saving.

Where I live deer and Elk are all over the place so a word of caution, when a deer crosses the road in front of you, continue to slow because there is a pretty good chance there is a second animal immediately following. The last one I hit was exactly that scenario. I was focused on the first and the second jumped out in front of me, only to meet his demise. And being very dark, Elk and Moose are difficult to see at night, particularly on dark asphalt, a little better on concrete, because concrete is lighter.

Hitting a large animal at speed can be not only very damaging to your vehicle, but to you as well.

Back in the late 1990's I was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood MO, and one of the county sheriff's offices was taking a lot of heat because they were trying to feed their prisoners road kill they had picked up from the roadside. Not their own hits but animals they came across or were called to.
