Yet another thing that's got me wondering "Why Did Ford Do That ?"

The spare tire is mounted such that you can't get to the Schrader Valve to check the air pressure.

Anybody here flip their spare? On my old Tacoma it was mounted valve stem down.

Not sure why they’d do it. I think I’ll try to flip mine sometime.

I have yet to crawl under my Ranger, yet it looks like they gave us a full size spare??? If so, that's way better than what we had on the Tacoma, the Tacoma also required that hand crank to get the tire down.

I think this one still has to be cranked down too. It looks like the Ranger still has a little room to go to a bigger size too!

There are different camps on this, one camp prefers better protection for the valve stem. (Finding that your valve stem got caught on something and ripped out is a downer when you need a spare.)

My 2002 Tacoma had a full size spare.

Yes the spare on my Ranger is the same tire size as the truck came with. And there is a crank... and a chain that holds the tire in place.

Yep... a chain.

I'm betting that plastic waffle looking transmission pan is more at risk than the valve stem on the spare. For the life of me I don't understand that.

I'd bet not, but if it really bothers you just flip the tire over and move on.

My 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab 6ft bed did not have a matching 265/70R16 spare - So what is the Key-hole in the bumper for? I don't see a "hole" for a crank in mine.

I'm sure it is to protect the valve stem from damage. Chances are it would never get torn off unless you do some off-roading or you're just unlucky. If you flip the wheel to make it easy to check pressure, you should check for damage too.

This is my set up, a 255/70R16 tire spare and aluminum rim (verified with a magnet). Stock tires are 265/60R 18’s Still do not have the hole as described in the manual, rather this more key like spot, assume it's the spot to lower the spare.

The lock is to prevent someone from stealing the spare I believe. You remove that and there will be a hole where you insert the rod to lower the spare.

Lowered mine and checked the pressure and flipped it so I can easily check without lowering again. All good now. Does not go up at far when flipped but not at risk or unsafe.

Could loop it down when stored.
