Well I'm going to call it at this point. Just short of 90k , transmission is pretty much dead. She still drives, but any driving at this point risks coming home on a tow truck. She started to act up at 65k. I changed the fluid at 70k and added a new pan a year ago. That got me to now, where she shifts hard or flares for a few seconds from 2-3 and 6-7. Today she got stuck in 7th gear at a stop light. Would not move, then after a bit, finally went back to 1st gear.

So instead of spending $6-7 at the dealership to fix, I went on to eBay and ordered a transmission out of a lightly damaged truck with only 5k miles on it. Picked it up for $1k + shipping and I'll install it myself.

I figured this buys me another 5 years and I can rebuild the original then. In the past, I would have hit the trade in lot before now. But ordering this truck new and it being paid off, I'm committed to her.

So here is her 5 year gift.

I did mine at 34k for the same basic symptoms, I probably could have gotten more mileage from it but I’m not taking chances with it. Bought a brand new unit from Ford, it’s supposed to have the upgraded C,D,F drum that is likely the cause of the failure in the first place.

@Loweredon33s, if you don't mind me asking. How much does a new transmission cost?

I've had some issues with mine from time to time, but hasn't happened consistently enough to have it checked.

At this point, they're just going to give me the canned response, "Sorry, we couldn't replicate the problem," that ALL auto makers like to give you when you take it to have it checked.

My dealer charged me just under $3k for the unit but there was an additional $1k for the core charge (refunded)
It came full of fluid with the torque converter installed. I installed it myself one evening after work and only had to add a pint of fluid to top it off when finished. I have a 4x4, I noticed that the 2wd one cost like $4500 though ??‍♂

Can the truck be driven to the dealer for the software fix for the new transmission?

Curious why it wasn't covered? A 2021 wasn't still under warranty?

Because I’m not willing to waste time with Ford. My truck is rather modified and it would be a fight to get it repaired under warranty and even if they did it’s likely to only get rebuilt. I use my truck for our shop R+D so I can’t afford to be working around a bad transmission or to be without the truck while I’m fighting with them. In my opinion it cost me less this way.

Came with fluid and you still had to top it off. Unbelievable. I commend you folks that did the labor yourselves. ?

So I guess this means the hard shifting tune + trans dipstick + PPE transpan and fluid changes every 30k still isn't enough to keep it from blowing up if it's a faulty drum sleeve?

My dealer is pretty good, at least they are now. Maybe I can pop in and get them to do the TSB before I hit five years/60k. I have worked on manual trans (changing clutch) but never an automatic. Doubt I can do a drum replacement myself but stranger things have happened.

You have brought up a very good point.

So far, it sucks taking out a transmission in these Rangers. Who puts a starter in the middle of the engine behind the oil filter?

IMHO, Ford has a long and storied history of designing vehicles that are difficult to service. The problem has only gotten worse as vehicles have become more complicated.... they do the same thing with electrical / electronic design decisions.
