OFF-ROAD / SNOW TIRES - RIMS w/ Stock O.D...?...?

So I had the local Big O do some research for me as to having a separate set of off-road / snow wheels / tires on 16" rims with a higher profile, but essentially the same outside dia' as the stock 18 inch'ers for some much more aggressive off-road rubber. They came up with the following:

LT285/70R 16 125/122P E Nitto Trail Grappler M's on "OP WHEELS" AR 23 16X8 Satin Black ... Their total O.T.D. mounted was going to be $2431.00 incl. $191.00 Sales tax... Does anyone here have experience with that set up and is that a good deal...?...? Big O says these Nitto Trail Grappler's are great, and the sales guys seems credible.

Tires are almost 32” and am I right in thinking those wheels have a 0 offset?

I’d be less worried about what they cost and more concerned about whether or not they’ll fit.

Big O has a calculator in their system that gives you exact o.d. and with height / width stat's, compared to stock set up, even speedo error. These were less than 1% off on speedo error.

If you're going to have a separate set of tires I'd get dedicated winter tires instead of just another set of all-terrains. Bridgestone Blizzaks in the stock size or on 16" rims a 265/75-16. I run those on my wife's minivan and it goes as good in snow as my truck and probably stops and turns better. She won't roll on anything else in the winter.

So I don't trust Big O Tires at all as I have had problems with them in the past.

When it comes to changing the wheels and tires to keep the same general diameter with a different wheel size it is much easier than you believe.

Let's assume you have 265/60-18's right. Ow from the factory and you want to get a set of basic steel 16's in the same size. All you have to do is add to the sidewall profile in the amount you are taking away from the wheel diameter (add 5 to sidewall for every inch of wheel diameter taken away). So to go to a 16' simply go with 265/70-16. Much easier than you thought huh?

I would guess that the speedo is more like 3-4% off. They might “fit” but you have to consider the anti-intrusion beams (crash bars) in front of and to the rear of your front tires. Stock offset is +55mm and the lower you go, the more chance you have of rubbing on those bars. Also, the higher you go in diameter without lifting or levelling the front of this truck, the more chance you have of hitting those crash bars.

Let me know if I have that stock tire size right and if the offset of your proposed rims is zero - the AR site suggests they are.

I will also state that I am not to well versed with Not to Tires. Some individuals like them, others not so much. I myself like my Firestone Destination XT's. Very strong OffRoad and do well with traction on Dry Wet and Winter conditions(For an All-Terrain that is). Assuming you might be ok with the idea of saving some money on wheels you can easily go to 265/65-18 and possibly a 275/65-18(a true 32) with no lift. It has already been confirmed to work with the Ranger for most 32's and factory wheels.

That is the route I would go

@Frenchy makes a good point about how sticking with “factory wheels” can help you go with a larger diameter.
