I’m trying to find the video, I’ll have to post it when I get home, but… the alternator is fine submerged in water. It’s caked on mud that causes it to overheat and fail. I’ve been in water up to the grille and have not had any issues after 45000 miles.
The snorkel brings in cleaner air, above the dust and, most importantly, makes the turbo sound wicked.

So you did not have to cut the fender to put this in?
That's great if not.
Snorkel is something I could never get in to.

Spent about a week in Utah this past summer. Southern part, hit up the parks:
Canyonland, Capital Reef, Arches, Bryce, Zion, Went down to St. George for a day.
Awesome state!

Question, and I am NOT being a smartass... but I'm not some hard core off roader so I don't know. What is the purpose of snorkels? I mean would you really take your truck through water so deep that the original air intake isn't sufficient?
Not sure if anyone else answered your question (then again I didn't get far) I have an answer to your question.

As much as a Snorkel can help with Deep Water, you have to do other things to your vehicle to make it ready for Deep Water.

The one thing a Snorkel can truly help with and why one would get it is to help with Dirt and Dust Intake when traveling OffRoad. Allow me to explain. When traveling down a Dirt Road your tires are simply kicking up Dirt and Dust(does not matter if in 2wd or 4wd). Most vehicles have the factory intake in the wheel wells. Other vehicles like the Ranger have it in the front grille. For a vehicle with a wheel well intake a snorkel makes a difference right away since you are not trying to suck in dirt from the wheel well anymore.

Now you are asking how a vehicle with the front grille intake benefits right? Well what if you are in a group/convoy on the trails? If you are not the lead vehicle then whoever is in front is kicking up Dirt and Dust for your vehicle to suck up. Eventually the Dirt and Dust will fall down, but depending on the distance between you and the person in front and your speed chances are it will be down at Grille level. That is where the Snorkel really comes in handy. With the intake that high you have way less chance of sucking up Dirt and Dust from a vehicle in front on the trail.

Another benefit as long as you have the Ram Head you have a true Ram Air intake that puts positive pressure on the intake. This results in cooler intake temps, a little bit more power(not a huge amount) and a little better MPG(multiple conditions will change the results but you can see between 1-2 MPG increase).

Now you might be wondering if you run into abnormal weather right? Well that depends. Snorkels are designed to help with Rain at the least due to ejection slots in the snorkel and the drain plug/bung hole in the bottom of the Factory intake box. As for Snow it is in your best interest to look into a Precleaner like Syclone or Donaldson Top Spin. Those have a fan inside that help direct Dirt, Dust, Rain, Snow and other Debris out the Ejection slot.

Hopefully this helps answer your question

The Mishimoto does not require drilling a giant hole in the fender as it takes the hole front the fake fender vent. You still have to drill a few holes, but you can reverse it without it being obvious if you feel the need

Was kind of a pain in the ass, and I should have washed my truck before I got started....

But over all I am pretty happy with it.
See if it was really worth it in the long run.

Definitely the Snorkel I would have gone with if I still had my Ranger. Depending on the type of Weather you deal with in your area I would recommend considering the Syclone PreCleaner. I have one on my 93 Pathfinder. So far I like it and it helps keep the Air Filter clean.

Here is a link to that PreCleaner

You have to drill a hole in the inner fender, but the Bourne (Mishimoto) snorkel installs in the vent location. You drill hardware holes, but they would be covered if you reinstalled the vent.

Still braver than I, where I go here in Utah I dont enounter much water deeper than the bottom of the of the diff.

Yeah I was looking at one of those.
I am going to see how well this does on it's own especially with snow, I got a sock someone recommended for when it is snowing just to prevent most of it from going directly in.

When I go out to the West Desert and near the Bonneville Salt Flats during the summer the dirt just turns into silt. As fun as it is, it is awful at the same time.

Why I live here, I love being able to out to the Shrub plains in the west desert, all the way up to the Pine/Aspen Forests in the mountains then out to red rock and beautiful Southern Utah. So much variety in environment every direction from SLC

To Frenchy's point about following other vehicles and being in their dust cloud, are there any engineering studies that document how high these very dynamic dust clouds are, and that the snorkels are effective at roof height? Dust particles are not always visible to the "naked" eye.

They do look cool though!

Let's assume that you simply want to run on the street and don't bother going OffRoad. If that is the case I would not bother with one. I say this because of your question. Yes there technically is Dust in the air that we can't see, but if that is your only concern then clearly you don't go OffRoad. Also this is why vehicle Manufacturers use paper filters from the factory instead of a K&N type filter.

As for how effective a snorkel can be against Dirt and Dust at roof height. As long as the Snorkel Head has the Ejection Slots then it is pretty effective. Those Slots are the first place for and Dirt Dust and other Debris to leave. There are some Snorkel Heads that don't have said Slots and those should be avoided. How effective is a snorkel percentage wise? If I recall correctly it is around 90-95% effective. That is due to not having a PreCeaner installed. Have a good PreCleaner like the Syclone or Donaldson Top Spin and your efficiency is up to 99.99% but you loose the RamAir Effect
