As promised, attached are some Blackstone Labs reports with Motorcraft 5W-30 (first change) vs. Amsoil (second oil change).

Some key takeaways:
- The Amsoil appears to be thicker but also sheared to a 5W-20 presumably due to the high temperatures this engine runs at.
- The fuel dilution increased in the summer even though this is a highway truck that sees state-to-state driving (except for the past month).
- The additive package in the Amsoil depleted quicker than the Motorcraft oil, even though the Motorcraft oil is a synthetic blend, and cheaper?
- The fuel economy of the Amsoil overall was lower than the Motorcraft oil even from Day 1. As soon as I put the Amsoil 5W-30 in, it was "draggy".

I'm going to post my next Blackstone report with Mobil 1 5W-30 once I have some miles on the oil, and see how it compares to Amsoil. To create a fair test, I'll try to use the truck in the same conditions (mostly highway, lots of long distance travel - for work and camping trips), and avoid short trips of under 15 miles as much as possible.

The Mobil 1 already feels less "draggy" and provides slightly better MPG, but it's still within a fraction of an MPG. Hopefully the additive package in Mobil 1 lasts as long as the Motorcraft oil, as the Motorcraft additive package looked great compared to Amsoil after approximately the same mileage (7,500).

Nice. Thanks for sharing. I just sent in my first baseline report from the previous owners (or dealership before sale) oil change. I presume they used Motorcraft 5w30. I stuck with that because I had a few pre-paid services carry over from our Transit. I wish I kept our paperwork from the van because I noticed in the notes that the service included BG MOA and 44K additives. I’m planning to call the service department first thing this morning because even though I don’t think it’s harmful, it was NOT mentioned when I was inquiring about 100% synthetic options.

I run Motul in my Bronco and planned to do the same for the Ranger once the pre-paid package runs out.

Thing is - both of our vehicle see a lot of under 15 mile drives (thankfully we both work in the town we live in). I’m really concerned about that in general. I need to research what type of precautions I can take to alleviate any issues down the line. We plan to keep both of these trucks for a long time.

This just helps prove my point of why Amsoil is a waste. If it was worth using them the vehicle manufacturers would recommend it.

Understanding the Ford Motocraft Oil is most likely made by a different company(would not be surprised if it was Mobile), Ford Recommends it for a reason.the same goes for GM, Nissan, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and any other major vehicle manufacturer. Most will use either Mobil or Castrol on the factory side.

@redone17 mentioned Motul which is a oil Nissan recommends for the Motorsport world. I also believe that they use it for the factory manual transmission fluid. It is a bit of a high cost as well, so you have to justify it. If the cost is reasonable then it's not so bad.

All in all the best way to go is to simply stick with the OEM stuff.

I sent in my first Blackstone last week and I've always run Mobil 1 5w-30 Extended performance. But I almost always take short trips.

I just change it every 6 months instead of going by miles.

Very interesting results, to say the least! I wish bottles of rebranded oil stated what brand was really in the bottle. Why I've stayed away from them in the past is because it could be Quaker State this month and lord knows what, the next. At least with Amsoil, I know I'm getting Amsoil in the bottle.
I'll hand it to Stihl, they're the only ones I know of that put the Castrol logo on the back of their 2-stroke oil bottles.

Even Ford knows better than to switch oil that often. Of the manufacturers we have available here in the states that most can afford many of them are using Mobile for the OEM oil. You can tell mainly from the bottle itself. Other manufacturers from Europe will usually stick with Castrol.

Just curious what sample option is everyone using?
Are these just the standard oil sample? $35.00 Test
I am getting ready for my 2nd oil change @ 10,000, did not sample first change. I decided to do sample on upcoming just for curiosity.

I pull samples often on aircraft engines and related engine accessories but have never tested my own vehicles.

I myself didn't not do any samples on my Ranger the entire time I had it. Why you ask? Simple, if I truly have to be concerned about the oil, then I clearly bought the wrong vehicle. Follow the Manufacturers recommendations for Maintenance and generally speaking the vehicle will do just fine

Damn. I need to do one of these, but I kind of feel like it's going to the doctor. I don't - because who wants bad news? Terrible way to stick my head in the sand, but there you go!

I drive my truck pretty hard in surface street traffic. Lots of racing from red light to red light and weaving in and out of traffic to avoid those idiots down here who play on their cell phones instead of actively driving their cars.

And then, on the other hand, there is my 2014 Mustang with only 14,000 miles and still a hint of that 2014 new-car smell. It sits for long periods of time without being run. But, I did just treat it to its first full synthetic oil change!

I think I need to face the music and get Blackstone analysis done for both of them.

So your saying you got better mileage with motocraft blend then Amsoil?

Not broke in yet , I started towing @ 1500
miles get 12/13 mpg towing 4500 lb high wind profile camper. + 20 city/highway
not towing, retired don’t drive except for food, doctor, and pulling every.

I changed it first at 1200 miles, using Amsoil on 3rd oil change 8000 miles 50%
Towing no issues93 octane and gas additive 4 oz per 10 gal.

cloud be waste , but how we roll @ less than 3500 annually.

Amsoils filter is better than Motocrafts IMO.

That's what I did. They sent me two free bottles. If I want more information I'll pay the extra $10 for the additional tests the second time. I'm guessing they will probably tell me I can wait longer between oil changes if anything.

I actually got these awhile ago and I just kept forgetting to take samples. Last oil change I remembered at the last second, slid under there and barely got enough to fill the sample container.

Yeah, most of these companies that have a brand stamped on the cap or somewhere have agreed to a contract and marketing of the product. That’s all that is.

If you are changing more than one variable each oil change why bother with testing?
Why pay for a test when you have to guess which variable caused the changes?
