My problem is the pricing during this "I want to overland boom" of the past few years.

It is basically a bed rack combined with a RTT - something that generally cost about $2500 for the combination. Yes I understand there is a lot more raw material involved, but some of these price tags are a little silly. Ranging all the way up to $20,000 for bare bones models.

I think GFC makes some affordable clam shell style campers for under $10,000.

I imagine the mark up on these products is astronomical.

Lets use some common sense, you can get a full blown compact travel trailer, which involves a lot more labor and raw material, fit and finish, which is way more square footage, for the same price or less.

Point in case, I can't off road with it withought some modifications, but this thing caught my eye recently; Rockwood Geo PRO 15TB.

- standing room with sleeping, cooking, wet bath quarters. It is basically a square drop trailer that you can stand in.

I've seen 2022 models going for around $20,000.

Or you can get an ALUCARD midsize truck camper for $30,000+ so you can sleep in basically a coffin. The only time (IMO) a truck camper makes sense is if you are deep off road camping. Even then people having been doing that with pull behinds with proper clearance and full rotating hitches too.

I get that both types shine in certain situations, but its a hard pill to swallow the price difference. If we were comparing material and labor cost between the two types of products there is a whole lot of "its the cool thing to do right now" built into truck campers and by a whole lot I mean laughing their way to the bank kind.

That’s pretty slick. Even if you don’t put a bike or something else in it, you have that space for whatever. Smart.

Hey @subquark , it looks like it has a Bed Rug interior - right up your alley David.
That's exactly why I want it...

I can't think of the name right now, but there is a company out there putting out DIY off road square drops for right under $5,000. Basically the exterior is done, but your imagination is in charge of the interior.

My thing is standing room. I could do with a shower/bathroom being an outside hookup and cooking too, but I want to be able to stand up-right inside. If not for that I'd get a square drop and call it a day.

BTW I am still waiting for you or @Glocker to make an offroad trip plan so I can meet up with either of you. I'd say @DukeCanBuildit but he ain't anywhere near us.

Corporate drone. Dilbert's world is alive & well.
Truck campers are the best! (IMHO obviously.) But as mid-size truck lovers we have to face the fact that we just don't have the payload capacity to really make it work beyond the basics. My Tremor's capacity is just over 1400 pounds. Not a lot to work with from a camper perspective.

I’m on the same page about being able to stand upright.

It would be great if some company out there made a square drop, no taller than cab or topper height, with a hard-sided “slide out” that goes straight up or a hard-sided clam shell style roof, hinged at one end. There are some soft-sided pop-ups and clam shell trailers out there but I’m not a fan of the fabric sides (noise, wind, water, etc.). I saw a hard-sided fold-up, peaked roof model online but it was…meh.

Of course, it would have to be super lightweight, built like a Bruder, and just about free.

There is just about every type of camper out there of any size, for the right money. I've seen some vertical telescopic hard wall pop up campers... of course they cost a meeeeellion dollars.
