So I’ve had my ranger just under a year and today I noticed the steering wheel at the top like the rubber outer layer is peeing off. Not necessarily a big deal or even that big of a spot missing. Just shouldn’t be happening on a barely 1 year old truck let alone one with barely 11k miles on it. Is this common? My ford dealer gave me a hard time about warranting it saying it’s “user error”. Even tho that’s not even where I keep my hand 90% of the time while driving.

This happened to my 2008 Ford Fusion and drove me nuts. I still hate the rubber steering wheels over the leather wrapped style. I think I was running my hand there when making u-turns and tight turns, but it still shouldn’t rub off. This was a con to me about the F150 XL when I was shopping full size trucks.

when he says "user error" does he mean cleaning products, not where you put your hands?

No they mean like where I put my hand. Pretty much said it’s like “it’s wear and tear from your hand” and i argued with him about it

worn out after a year, really doesn't help them pump up the "quality" of the products.

can you post a picture?

Must be the same supplier Paccar uses/used. I had two company Kenworths that did the same thing and others in the fleet also did this. The only thing I can think of that might be causing it is, I think the outer "leather grain" pattern might be hot stamped or vacu-formed on and wears away. The inner stuff doesn't rub off on your hands. My 2021 STX Ranger also has the urethane steering wheel and so far no problem at 49,000mi.

That’s what I’m saying. No way that’s user error. I’ve went and looked at used rangers just to see and nothing

I really recommend a stitch on steering wheel wrap. They feel awesome to the touch.

They are such a pain in the ass to put on, for me at least. I'd recommend a stitch on cover and suggest paying someone to make it their problem.

I have seen this problem before. In the early 90's, a friend of mine bought a F150 xlt. came with a leather wrapped steering wheel. After about 6 months the steering wheel started to peel. We replaced it under warranty. I talked to him about the problem and asked him about the chemicals from his skin he was subject to because of his job. He said he would be sure to make sure to wash and rinse carefully after work. Never had another problem. After we got a scrap ticket, I pulled the wheel out of the dumpster and installed it on my truck. The spot never got any worse. I just think it had a lot to do with the oils on his skin that were a part of his job. Something to think about.

Maybe it got nicked by something. A ring perhaps, or your keys?

Only way I see it actually being user error as if you had a ring that was had sharp edges. Gotta love ford and their dealers.
