Searched the site for something similar but not much luck with this exact issue.

Sometimes, my Sync never comes on. I can hear the radio but the screen is not on. I can control the volume of the radio through the steering wheel buttons and the volume control on the dash. The buttons on the steering wheel that control voice command do not work. It will stay like this no matter what I do until I turn off the truck. When I restart the truck, sometimes the same issues is still present, and sometimes my screen comes on and everything works as normal. It is hit or miss. Right now it works probbly 20 times qnd then doesn't. Then when it comes back on, I have no idea why.

I have not done an update for a very long time so it can't be because of a recent software update.

Any suggestions? Driving me nuts.

Add me to the list. Love the truck, but Sync has got to be the worst part of the truck

If you're still running version 3.4.22251, the memory is full and it is unable to retain the info and all sorts of gremlins pop up. I did the CyanLabs sync update, then Ford released the same update and I installed the Ford update over the CyanLabs update so Ford would have a record that my Sync is current. It's SUPER frustrating...I know.

These are the steps I used and it worked (so far).
1. Make you you are using a fairly new USB thumb drive with high storage, 32gb should be way sufficient.
2. Format the thumb drive on your pc using exFat option. IMPORTANT
3. Download the update from Ford to the thumb drive.
4. Start your truck. (make sure the auto-stop feature is disabled. located in the dash settings.)
4a. Do the next steps in immediate succession.
[For reference in a bit; soft reset is holding main audio power button and the >> Right Seek arrows at the same time.]
5. Go into the Sync screen and select Master Reset.
6. When the system returns to main screen (maps and all) perform 1 soft reset, let it return to main screen (maps and all) and complete a second soft reset.
7. When the screen returns after the second soft reset, insert the Thumb Drive into the USB port.

Hopefully this will allow the software to take from the thumb drive. Performing the master reset and 2 soft resets in succession apparently clears enough memory in the system to begin pulling and retaining data from the Thumb drive. Formating the thumb drive before downloading the software to it is SUPER important.
I was able to locate a PDF on the Ford site that was helpful to walk through all the steps to download and install (minus all the resets) the update. For ford to recognize you have the most current update you'll need to upload an XML file from the USB (that sync places there during install) to the Ford site.
You'll probably need to sign into your account at Ford.com to set up the download of the new sync version.
Everything returned for me, even the connectivity to resume the FordApp.
Good luck....

I usually use CyanLabs to do my updates. I found that if I enable the WiFi and connect to my home WiFi, Ford will recognize the update was made in a couple of days and show it on their website. YMMV

Wow - Thank you so much for the very detailed proceedure. I greatly appreciate it. I start the fun a little later this morning or maybe tomorrow. Issues are getting worse on the Ranger and it makes the Truck not so fun to drive. Thank you again.

I too use Cyanlabs to do my updates. They usually have the latest updates before Ford puts them on their site. Also Ford has had endless issues with uploading the XML file and I really don't care if Ford knows I have the latest version. The Ford WIFI updates have never worked reliably for me and their USB download procedure is a pain in the butt.
