While there are plenty of pickup trucks that are built to last on the market, reliability is not the question here. If your truck can't carry or tow the amounts that you need, then all it becomes is a big, pointless machine. Many truck manufacturers boast impressive towing and payload capacity figures, which technically are true, but you find those usually on the higher trim models. The lower trims don't necessarily meet these figures. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of 10 pickup trucks that struggle when it comes to towing and payload capacity.

Believe it or not, that's a '22 Ford Ranger with a few mod ideas from fellow forum members.

The biggest change, though, is using Graphene.

Graphene makes everything look bigger and shinier (and I should know after some spilled in my lap - there goes my normal Speedo wardrobe when I head the the dump). =D

I don't know what to say about this list. One of the things I liked when looking at the Ranger vs other mid-size pickups was the consistency of it. If you have the appropriate hitch all Rangers at all trim levels can tow 7500 lbs. Which can not be said for most trucks. I don't feel like getting too negative about the authors of the list but I wonder how much actual research went into putting it together.

Seems sus to me. I'm no Toyota fanboy, but is this really true about Tacoma, or is this 1999 numbers:

"The base model SR trim and Access Cab configuration with a 6-foot bed is not able to pull that much. It's powered by a 2.7-liter, four-cylinder engine that gives 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque."

When I looked it up, seems those numbers are correct.
2.7-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder with VVT-i; 159 hp @ 5200 rpm; 180 lb.-ft. @ 3800 rpm
1685 Payload
3500 Towing

Staying 10% below maximum is sound advice for any towing situation. Their "insight" on the Ranger has zero substance.

Only thing I tow is a 10' aluminum utility trailer with 2' high sides all around which I use to go for my load of bulk sawdust/shavings for horse bedding. Holds 4 big scoops so it's heaped pretty high. I cover with a heavy vinyl waterproof tarp and haul home no problem. I do use Tow mode.

Used to use my 8 cyl. Mountaineer Premier for the job. Supposed to have the same tow rating as my Ranger. I did have to have my transmission worked on at 110,000 miles though. It also has a tow mode. Now it's just my "farm car" at 125,000 miles.

Funny that the 10% safety thing was written in a way that makes it seem like that only applies to the Ranger.

I also like how a Maverick may not be suitable for a fifth wheel!

I guess that means I should stop towing my Cat D9!

Not every article is well written or well researched, but sometimes you come across one so terrible, you finish with fewer braincells than you started with. This is one of those articles.

9 out of 10 of the trucks on that list are mid-size or smaller, which suggests that they're comparing all trucks regardless of size. I fully expect that my mid-size truck wouldn't pull as much as a full-size truck; it also didn't pull as much out of my wallet....at least, until I came here....
