A pair of Georgia siblings have been awarded $1.7billion in punitive damages from Ford for a 2014 car crash that killed their parents.

In 2014, Voncile and Melvin Hill died after their Ford F-250 blew a tire and rolled over.

The couple - aged 62 and 74 - were on their way to pick up a new tractor part to be used on their farm in Georgia.

A jury this week ruled that they should have survived the crash and would have had the roof of their F-250 been designed properly.

Instead, it crunched under the impact of the roll and the pair later died of injuries.

Just a few yrs back worked with a guy who was living on the edge, he rolled his Chevy truck on the way to work multiple times, most of the roof was flattened except a small portion over the driver, he survived with minor injuries after that he went it rehab and cleaned up his act.

Usually those type of large awards are reduced upon appeal, automakers cannot build indestructible vehicles unless we all drive armored vehicles.

I read this on Fox business. Crazy times. Hopefully on appeal, this will get fixed. Juries are crazy because they have been taught that companies are evil. Remember, the people on the jury were the ones not smart enough to get out of it.

A jury awards a ridiculous sum to a ridiculous lawsuit, it won't be paid, nor should it , only winners here are the guys racking up billable hours...
The jury system as it exists in the US is either no longer used or has never been used in other countries - possibly to avoid these type of judgements. Ford cannot be happy with the performance of their legal dept but upon appeal with the right judge these type of absurd settlements are almost always reduced.

Last time I did my civic duty was the jury foreperson, totally ridiculous case where police breaking up a bar fight push a lady who repeatedly interfered and refused to obey police commands, for 3 days we sat there having to listen to obvious lies from character witness of the plaintiff whose stores contradicted the preceding testimony. My fellow jurists didn't even allow me to go through the deliberations of each count, they all said guilty and let's put this travesty to an end.

The one time I awarded a sum as a jury member I was floored to find there was no bracket and no upper limit. We could have given the plaintiff $100 or $10 million. Juries have a big flaw, being they're made of up your peers and most of your peers are too stupid to be on a jury.

And what is this shit?
"Under Georgia law, the state is given 75 percent of the $1.7billion, leaving $425million for the Hill family to claim. In total, the family now stands to gain $450million from the car manufacturer. "

I think there is at least one attorney on this site - they probably would know more but from memory jury by peers has it origins dating back to the Magna Carta and the intent was for English noblemen to be tried by their peers - other noblemen. I agree regards to your comments on what our peers are today and as we drive Rangers we are therefore more intelligent than our peers, esp those that drive Tacomas.

Now I'm envisioning me having a court date and a bunch of Tacoma jurists see me get out of my Ranger in the parking lot.
