Well, while we are on the topic of Toyota... I saw this article and these renditions today of a potential 2024 Tacoma, assumed from an international model. Looks like they're really stepping up their innovation game lol

App access I can live without but crippling a vehicle, I’ll draw the line at that. I believe I read BMW was even doing it for heated seats. I just couldn’t buy a vehicle that cripples features with fees. I guess I am getting to be part of the old and crabby crowd.

I am a young fart but these damn subscriptions sounds RIDICULOUS. I think it makes more sense for the leasers... but if I pay 30k+ for a vehicle, I don't want to pay a monthly fee to freakin' use the package I paid for. There needs to be legitimate pushback and awareness about these stupid practices. I hope companies that do this will get less sales, but people are dumb with money and want to support further capitalization of EVERY ASPECT of the world. F*** off. Sorry I don't usually curse on here but this really rubs me the wrong way.

Most manufactures are doing this now with their apps. i know for a fact: Kia/Hyundai (keyfob remote starter is still an option, requires no subscription), bmw, Subaru, Toyota. I’m sure there are more but those are the ones I know for a fact. Kias app is free for like 5+ years and is leagues better than ford pass. as Long as the next vehicle I get has regular remote start on the fob I wont mind if they offer the app as an additional option.

soo i dont make threads like this but boredom at work got me searching for the fun of it and it turns out for the new tundra you have to pay 8 bucks a month (80 per year) to keep your remote start working... yuuuup its a subscription thing for a remote start that is rather basic its just a button on the fob like standard vehicles... no phone app no programed start times just a simple button to turn on and runs for 10mins then shuts off and you have to pay for it.... but yet ford will give out our stuff for free... i like toyota and always will but this is just dumb...

i be bored at work so lets chat about it lol
Insane to.pay that. You can get one installed down the street from me for $150. Or buy one on 12volt.com that uses the oem remote, I installed one in my wife's Fusion in less than 90 minutes.

To be fair... this is not really true. As a cost saving measure, they buy and install one seat, in some models. If you don't buy the trim which covers heated seats, then you have the option to have them for a monthly fee. If at some point you, or maybe a second owner can pay to have the system turned on permanently.

This is the same cost cutting that the electronic manufacturers have been doing for decades. Do you have a second tier Samsung TV? No doubt it's the same main board as the top tier. You can get a service remote and service manual, and turn on features that your TV didn't have out of the box.

I have no issue with the BMW model. You don't want to pay for the trim with heated seats... you don't get them. But unlike other manufacturers who haven't figured out purchasing by scale, you can get them turned on in the Winter. You can't do that in a XLT Tremor. To begrudge this (and I'm only talking the BMW) is basically Communism.

What Toyota is doing or GM; I haven't looked to deep, so I have no comment.

Looks like I will just keep driving what I have. What's next? A subscription for tires?
Volvo offers subscription leases on whole vehicles. Drive a C40 back & forth to work, swap it for a XC90 for your week vacation in the hills, then get the V60 for your road trip.
