The other night I was taking the lady out to a good dinner and a show. Bopping along at 65ish on a well known to me freeway when I looked up just as the collision alarms sounded and flashed and traffic in the fast lane was dead stopped. I'm not sure what distracted me, but it did. I think I was checking my mirrors and rear, but uncertain, it's a blind spot in my memory.

I raced motocross for a long time and boy am I happy it honed my skills in close quarters "combat" and I hit the brakes with everything I had while remaining frightfully calm, instantly did a right-hand mirror check, calculated my expected trajectory if I chose that route, and committed.

I missed the car in front of me by probably an inch or two as I heard the parking sensors do their panic tone. I had intended to cut it close to give myself, and potential other drivers, maximum time to move if needed.

All worked out and everything is good.

I was the idiot.

The real meat: My '21 Lariat Tremor performed phenomenally. It really saved our lives. It alerted me, and then when I jammed on the binders, it took my commands competently, smoothly, and without complaint. Then, because I was in traffic (the other 2 lanes were flowing at-speed) and didn't know how far behind me another car was, got up and when when I commanded him (his name is Moby Dick) to get back up to speed. He's not leaving my garage for a very long time.

Anyone worried about emergency handling, shouldn't worried.

Thought I'd share.

EDIT: So my brain typed "breaks" instead of brakes. Sorry, my bad!

Good job on avoiding an accident. I had a similar event a few years ago in my Lariat Ranger. The AEB really saved my butt from a wreck. I was just 200 miles into a 1,200 mile drive home at the time. I ended up coming to a stop with just inches to spare between a Buick on the left and the concrete Jersey barrier on the right. If I remember correctly I looked down just a second at the GPS screen when the AEB activated and started braking before I could get my foot to the brake pedal. I caught it on my dashcam.

When I see this particular spelling error, I always ask myself "How does a car guy get THIS wrong...?"

Glad you all are OK and the Ranger performed as designed. We sometimes make fun of the "nannies" built into modern vehicles but in fact they do save lives.

I live on a hilly curvy road that has a speed limit of 55. I can testify that many deer, possums, racoons, etc. lived to see another day due to anti-lock brakes.

When I was still employed it was normal for my work day to start at 3:00 am. One morning I crested a hill only to find a horse standing broadside in the middle of the road. I was driving a chevy S10 Blazer at the time. Panic stops usually resulted in the back end wanting to pass the front end. I ended up sideways right next to the horse. Now that was a wake up call for sure.

I'm glad you and the horse made it. I had a 1993 Nissan pickup. I was going 30 mph on a damp asphalt road one night. I applied the brakes to make a left turn. Next thing I know I'm facing the opposite direction. lol The back end slid around and I did a perfect 180 degree spin. Stayed on the road, didn't hit a thing. Fortunately there wasn't any traffic around.

Just a question for those with higher models above XL and STX. When the warning goes off, does the display on the center dash light up, because on XL's and STX's there is a row of LED's on the dash near the windshield that lights up. Being kind of short, I don't see the LED's themselves, but I do see the reflection on the windshield, sort of like a HUD when the warning goes off.

On my Lariat there's a red flashing square that goes off if someone stops or turns quickly. It's just to the left of the spedo and you definitely can't miss it.

Interesting, I would have thought all trims had that HUD row like we have in the XL. It's a bugger to clean but it's highly visible whenever I start the truck.

I do want to save a box (now where could I get an empty box?) and try out the AEB one day.
