Does anyone know if this is the same exact transmission that’s installed in the F-150’s?

The 10R80 seems to feel different in our Rangers vs. F-150’s (more coasting) and I was wondering if they have a different torque converter size to make the 7,500lb tow rating with a 4cyl.

The 10L80 in Camaro SS’s shifts totally different than our units, to the point where I wish the Camaro shift logic could be put into our trucks (no gear hunting, consistent shifts, quick and firm vs inconsistent).

I have over 5,000 miles and my 10 speed transmission has apparently not completed the learning cycle, as going up steep hills shows some lurch, slip, and then finally clutch engagement in cruise control which certainly did not happen with the previous 6R80/6L80E units I’ve driven.

If the Camaro units are supposedly licensed by Ford and similar internally, why do they shift so well and perform so consistently?

I'm 99.98% sure it is the same exact transmission as in the F-150s.

I'm no expert, but my guess is that much of how these work is based on software, no the actual hardware, especially shift patterns. Each vehicle has its own version of software that was written for it, and they work and feel different.

The software in our trucks appears to prioritize things other than transmission life, as I’ve had the unit slip and lurch under certain conditions.

For example, light ahead is red, you let off the gas to coast, then brake to approx. 30-35mph as you get closer. The light suddenly turns green and the 10R80 fails to pick a gear when accelerating, giving the feeling of being stuck between gears while the RPMs “flare” and then the eventual “catch” which may or may not be jolting depending on throttle input.

This takes like 1/2 second, but still is unusual operation compared to other automatics that don’t do this.

I’ve basically learned to give as little throttle input as possible until the trans has done shifting, but with cruise you can easily get the same behavior going through hills and steep mountain passes until the clutch engagement is done.

Is this due to EPA requirements or did Ford just leave some tuning on the table with these 10R80’s?

Looks like this is normal operation, see 5 and 6 in this user’s post. Apparently he is a Ford tech too.

Damn. Sounds like he should just take his truck to the crusher.

Yeah. Most of that guy’s post is nitpicking. As a supposed Ford tech I guess he has the ability to get any fit and finish issues resolved, so why not do it on work time lol?

However, does anyone have a 10R80 that does not exhibit the jerky/slipping behavior at times?

It seems as if all Ranger 10R80’s shift this way and that may be the cause of excessive internal wear compared to the other vehicles that use this trans.

All I can say is after I got the Livernois Tow Tune i never had any real problems for the transmission shifting. Of anything I still understood that the 10R80 is a whole different animal

in sport mode or tow mode i dont feel it at all really and now that im at 11k miles its really not super common either and a lot have reported after tuning the vehicle it makes it a lot better

FWIW, mine never slips in tow mode whether or not you are towing. It drives great and produces firm, quick shifts when towing. It is when Tow/Haul is off that I get all the jerky shifting, sometimes on flat ground and worse in steep hills. The RPM “flare” is approximately 200-300 until it “catches”.

Are there any risks of driving in Tow/Haul all the time? Will this reduce long term longevity or cause any warranty concerns?

Tow/Haul is closer to the more refined versions of this trans I have driven. Not all the way there, but much better than “D”
