Maybe it's due to the insulation under my hood, but I don't hear this noise in the interior. I changed my oil yesterday (39,000 miles), and then checked for leaks (there were none) but the hood was open heard this loud flutter noise. I checked for obstructions around the fan, and found none. (Don't worry, I turned off the engine before I checked). What is my Ranger trying to tell me (BTW, I already have a damper so it's not wanting that... :) )?

My hearing isn't what it used to be, but I'm pretty sure that is just the "sewing machine" sounds this engine makes - between the high pressure injectors and the high pressure fuel pump, it does kind of sound like a sewing machine - but it is all normal.

What Rob said. When I first got mine I thought there was a Singer sewing machine under the hood for an engine. Then others stated it's just the normal sounds.

? Maybe your damper is lonely and wants a partner??

I had the same noise and I assume its valve train, or associated mechanism, because when I changed the oil and it went away.
Ironically enough, a total stranger (and new Ranger owner) came up to me in the mall parking lot and asked me if my engine made that noise lol.

Drive a Bronco, it's 10x louder.

Mostly because the Ranger has better sound deadening treatment, the Bronco not so much.

Are you saying that you have dampers for the engine hood? You know, so that it doesn't close too hard.....
