I'M SURE THIS WONT HELP BUT I HAD TRANNY PROBLEMS WITH MY F150, IT WOULD TRY TO START FROM A STOPPED POSITION IN FIFTH GEAR. NOT ALWAYS, BUT ONCE OR TWICE A DAY. AFTER I WENT TO ONE DEALERSHIP FOR ESTIMATE, THEY TOLD ME I WOULD NEED A NEW TRANNY AT BIG MONEY, FIVE TO TEN THOUSAND DEPENDING?? SO I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP AND TRADED IT IN ON ANOTHER VEHICLE. BUYER BEWARE RIGHT. HOWEVER, YOU MAY NOT BE IN A POSITION TO DO THIS. A MONTH LATER FORD SENT ME A RECAL FOR THAT EXACT PROBLEM...SHIT HAPPENS
That's kinda hard to read in all caps, friend.
Just saying.

For anyone interested, the link RangerBill provided discusses this issue in great lengths. Here is another person who experienced exactly what my truck is doing. He replaced the EGR valve as most others in this 18 page thread and it fixed this issue.

"Ok, swinging in for another detailed data point. I was experiencing the issues detailed in this thread: low rpm bucking/surging. It was growing worse as I let it linger on and I was beginning to experience it at speeds up to 45mph.

I'd always press the +/- button on the shifter so I could watch what gears the bucking/surging took place. Any gear above 4th could do it, but 7th and 8th gear were the worst offenders. The truck was trying to be in 7th gear at 28mph and the RPMs were at about 1,100. Yuck.

Yesterday, I called around and actually found a Ford dealer about an hour away had the LB5Z-9J433-B Part. I went out and picked it up. On the way home the truck was bucking in my local town's main street like I was on a surging roller coaster. I was praying this part worked. Got home, spent about 30 minutes installing the part. 10 minutes of that was hunting for batteries for my flashlight because it was apparently dead...

Couple install notes: when the old part came off there was a small amount of fluid (water?) in the lines. I vaguely remembered someone suggesting moisture on the sensors is a problem. So I dabbed the connection points with a shop towel. Got the new part on, and huge shout out for those twist off ring clips. Super clever!

I hopped in the truck and set off for the gas station. If this worked I was treating myself to a coca-cola. Sure enough, everything was fixed! I couldn't believe how smooth the truck was behaving. Maybe I am crazy, but the engine just sounded smoother/quieter too. I rode around town just waiting for the surging to start slapping me around in the seats. Nope. Totally and completely fixed. There are some of those harder shifts that the Ranger's 10 speed occasionally has, but never any bucking while in a gear now. Interestingly, the truck was holding into 6th gear at that 28mph I mentioned above. It's as if the sensor is allowing the truck to make better decisions about how to manage the transmission. I'm just guessing about that tho.

Anyway, HUGE THANKS to everyone in this thread. All the people recommending this part, buying advice, and install advice. Massive massive thank you!

Apologies for the longer write up, but I wanted to include detail in case someone else stumbled across this thread and the extra detail might help them feel more confident about trying this solution. Thanks again, everyone!"

I wonder how many transmissions and Torque converters and technician hours Ford has thrown at this problem ? Lots and lots , and it's a $20 part most of the time , or maybe all of the time , why not lead with that?

I am glad it worked out. If I ever get the symptoms, I will know what to do. And I won't have to bash Ford.

Well there ya go. Never always just "trust" a dealership and its scanners ("yea it threw a bunch of codes" is a line often used by service advisors who just want to throw some parts at something and get you gone). Just hope and pray your Audi is so easily fixed WHEN it breaks..

Glad you got it fixed for cheap and thanks for sharing so if it happens to anyone here we'll have this piece of info. I think Ford tried to do right by you, they had no obligation to offer anything and offered $2k. But the dealer and their service department have some issues...

Ford could save MILLIONS if they simply had one of their guys monitor this forum , more stuff diagnosed and fixed here than there , and the fixes here are much cheaper, how many Rangers have been or are right now sitting at a dealership for non existing Torque converter issues ?

Well mine isn’t fixed yet. Called local places for the part and no one has it. In the link provided by RangerBill, there was a link to a dealership called Varsity Ford. Just orders the part. $21 for the part and I spent extra to get it here quickly ($18 shipping). I’ll either have the new part installed on Friday or Monday and will let everyone know the results.

I bet 50 people on that link had the same symptoms. Some had the Ranger in the shop for over 100 days and then came across this thread and replaced the EGR valve themselves and the problem went away. Hopefully this works.

And as mentioned in the original post, I like this dealership and they have been good to me. Ford Company, not so much.

Betting if it turns out to be the EGR you'll change your mind.

Was the truck ever undercoated?

Why did you say it was fixed if it wasn't?

Geez man, I mean you can have whatever attitude toward Ford Corp. you like but you drug your feet and did not even know the length of your warranty. 50k factory powertrain warranty’s are Extremely common as well. This is on you.
Yeah, i'm going to have to agree with this too. He noticed the issue a while ago, and decided to go after the warranty was over, and Ford still agreed to help? I think Ford could easily say kick rocks, he came in past his warranty period. That's on him, not ford.

I don’t think I said my truck was fixed. I was sharing a story of one individual whose truck was fixed.
And nope, no undercoating. Do I dare ask what the issue is with undercoating

Yep. My question was if the fault codes the machine kicked out was date stamped. If so, it would show that the truck was having issues before I was 200 miles over the warranty. I was in the middle of nowhere over 400 miles away when the issue got much worse. I called as soon as I got home to schedule an appointment. My truck was 200 miles over the warranty.

what was interesting was while at the dealership, they could tell how many miles I drove each day and where I was. When they looked at the date when I called, I had driven over 400 miles as mentioned.

Anyway, was just asking a simple question and looking for advice on how to approach this with Ford. Nothing more.
