Anyone that is good with HR role will have their crafted questions prepared to see how your going to answer. Quite a few of these type of questions are on the net. Hone up on these and then have the confidence to answer them to your benefit. For instance, one I would ask is, if you had the perfect job what would it be? What I’m looking for in the answer is someone that wants to be engaged, willing to take calculated risks, needing others to help. Educating through research to plan a good path, etc. So many more answers that come will allow me to shape an opinion of my own if they fit our need.

Mine was typically something like: someone who can ruin your career has asked you to do something illegal. How do you respond?

I got one seriously wrong answer to that " let them do it they can ruin my career"

What I was looking for was something closer to pull them aside.. away from their subordinates and let them know how/why that is wrong. Maybe give them some legal course of actions. Etc. Calling someone out in a group can be bad in other ways... But the answer; let them do it. That was... Interesting.

I have hired more than a few people being in HR but I don't want to walk into an interview like it's for a military based job. The last time I did a civilian interview was 2003, when I did some time as a typical once a month national guard member. I got that job as a copier tech until I went back active duty.


Tips/Advice for going into a potential six figure job? I'll be in the room with a VP and their HR Director (potential new boss). Google is a huge friend in this as well as what I've learned from my masters etc. So I know the basics. Might be looking for something I'm not thinking about to prepare.


I know. Weird place to ask and I'm fully expecting some smart answers with this crowd like "punch the biggest person in the room."

That said the vast majority of the members here have been around for a bit and probably sat through more interviews than I have.. hell might have some HR heavies running around in a Ranger.

So, whatcha got? Jokes or not. The funny stuff might help me relax a bit.

Considering that I recently landed a job with similar compensation I'll share what I have. I'm in the guard, prior active so I can relate. I was deployed last summer to Saudi and was determined to have a good job when I came home. I had roughly 30 interviews through wifi calling and it was rough at times. I made a solid point to mention where I was and why, never like to push the military background too much. Some employers love it, others think we all have PTSD. Seems like a bad way to look at it but it's real.

I never prepare for interviews and damn near shake violently while waiting to walk into an office or wait for a phone call. I make a point to look calm cool and collected. Speak clearly and normally. No big words and no dumb words (yolo) the person who is hiring you is a person just like you. Be confident without being arrogant, big difference and obvious to others. Be ready to have examples for the HR related questions, like tell me about a time when.... Those are the worst.

My best interviews are the ones that move past that and become almost personable. When I have a chance to talk about how I love to work and I do it all for my family. Sometimes comes up if they ask what motivates you as well. I know this is nothing specific but I hope it helps. I go in with no expectations and try to let them figure out that I am honest, sincere, actually care, a hard worker, and I can have a decent professional conversation.

Also I tend to avoid my education unless they specifically ask. It's on my resume, it speaks for itself. I have like 5 degrees, only 3 listed. 2 Bachelor degrees and one Masters. If I tell people that I sound like some arrogant ass. So please cast your judgement 5g family. I'm a stuck up white collar snob, that is secretly blue collar to the core.

1] Be confident that you have useful skills that you want to contribute.
2] Be honest about your skills and your goals.
3] Be optimistic and maintain reasonable eye contact.
4] Dress for the job you want.
5] ( or actually #1) show respect and be on time.
6] You don't have to spill your every opinion, but don't compromise your sincerely held principles.
I.E.... If they are "woke" and you are not ,(or vice versa) move on and keep looking for a better fit.
7] Let them know that you hope to benefit their organization as well as yourself.
8] Don't ever beg.... its unbecoming, humiliating and it never works.
