To be kinda fair, the 1974 Mach 1 soldiered on in the Mustang II, first with the 2.8L V6 from the Capri and then with the 302 (4.9L) Windsor V8 from 1975-78. The 302 was rated at a tire shredding 140 hp, but many other cars were rated at 90-125 hp then. there was also a Cobra II package at the time, and the Ghia with its 89 hp 2.3L I-4, or less than one third the hp of our Rangers!
1975 Mustang II Ghia- An't no jive, children!

A kid I knew in high school rocked a Cobra II, blue over white.

It was in decent shape 30 years ago. Wonder if he kept it? Only an Ecoboost, 6 spd, and a rear-end away from trouble.

FWIW, the Mach 1 was an appearance package that first started in 1968. It came with a low HP 351 V8 with a 2bbl carb and single exhaust. With the Mustang redesign in 71 the standard engine was a 302 2bbl single exhaust. You could as an option get the performance v8s that were available in other Mustangs but they were not part of the Mach 1 package.

The Mach 1 appearance package was also available on the Mustang II from 74 to 78 with a v6 and optionally the 302.

In the early 2000s the Mach 1 name was resurrected for the Mustang and slotted in-between the GT and Cobra. This was the first time the Mach 1 badging meant it was a performance version of a Mustang.

The 21 Mustang Mach 1 is the first time the name approaches halo car status. But the Shelby GT500 is really the halo car version of the Mustang.
Thank you, I appreciate the detailed reply. I should have researched better ;)

Damn that's ugly! I was never a Mustang guy, GM was my speed car interest when I was young. Thanks for the correction. :)
I’m going to say 87.3% of Internet users bitching about the dilution of the Mach moniker know roughly as much about its history as you do ?.

I was on Block Island for a few days and saw the Maverick up close and driving by. Looks like a rolling brick. Very squared off and black trim on white truck made it look worse. Saw a Hyundai Santa Cruz pick up, which I think is direct competition, and the looks blew it away. I have a 2014 Hyundai and lov e its performance and reliability, as well as dealer/manufacturer support. Even with the engine issue at 109000 miles, they gave us a COMPLETE motor under warantee.

Still not a fan of the Bronco, think Ford missed the boat. The ones I saw, not impressed. The only one I liked was a white, plain jane, 4 door normal thinner tires that Dirt Church Brewing in VT uses. And I only like that because it is set up and looks like what it should for what they are using it for, an SUV. Doesn't look like they will use for anything more than traveling dirt roads with their bikes and commuting to places. I've only seen pictures of more off road capable Broncos, but vehichles always look different in person.
"Look like a brick" is what modern full sized trucks remind me of now. Seems they keep getting ridiculous oversized grills and more brick like. To each their own is what I think parking my sleek Ranger next to a row of full sized. Everybody at work raves over the full sized truck esthetics but not my cup of tea

One of my gripes with Ford and Maverick is sticking FX4 and Tremor on them. Even on Ranger and F series, FX4, Tremor are mostly mall crawler packages, more so than purpose built off-road vehicles. They are capable for light duty, forest roads and some trails, but hardly a wheeler without replacing a tonne of components. Having a Maverick with 3 inches of clearance under the body skirts, is hardly an off-road vehicle. Would Fusion AWD Tremor be next if they had they not dropped it? Or Mustang Mach FX4?
There is no such thing as a tremor maverick you are misinformed

I saw a Blue Maverick Lariat FX4 in the wild (Sam's parking lot) the other day and talked to the owner. I liked it and it was the hybrid. He gave it a rave review!
the hybrid is fwd only you literally cannot get the fx4 in a hybrid it has to be a 2 liter awd

I ran an SVO 2.3L Turbo with a 5Spd in my 1980 Pinto for a few years.... VERY FAST!
That's about the same car with less power than the new EcoBoost but also less weight!

A family friend had a 1978 "king cobra" mustang II. I had a 74 mustang II with the 2.3 4 cylinder while in high school. I traded it in for a 1979 Fox Body cobra with the turbo 2.3 that was a dog an those crazy expensive P metric tires

I thought about one for a few days. Then I saw it in person. Then realized that for the same price I had my Maverick on order for/what I got my Ranger for (28k).. You only get the naturally aspirated 2.5 at a mighty 191hp... pulling over 4k curb weight and with no real gain in mpg. Ew.

Weirdly enough they did have 4 in my area when I bought my Ranger that could have maybe got my attention if they would have done what Ford did and throw the turbo in all trims. Then I would have seen that front grill again and been a bit sick.
