Be thankful it didn't happen on the way home! A few years back, that happened about a mile from my house. The resulting fire scorched two parked vehicles. I still wonder how the insurance company handled the situation?

Please do tell about gas cans costing that much. I'm very shocked and very sad for you.
Nicest cans on the market . I love mine and never worry about fuel spilling all over myself or the mower .

The sad thing about when something like that happens is you always think of something you have been wanting but were putting off because you didn't want to spend the money...then you have to spend the money on something you've already bought :(

Hey Doc, so far, two guys on here ( @9zero1790 and @rydfree ) think you have nice cans.

If I ever hear the same thing about myself, I’m calling Jenny Craig.

life lesson a buddy of mine and i learned the hard way... never ever pick up a bucket with the lid closed on the side of the road. esp one in the sticks.. it was full of the same thing all the politicians are full of. when he opened up that lid in the cab, on a hot summer day.

While driving to the gas station, I put 2 - 5 gallon steel safety cans
1648777297653.jpeg
($115.00 each) in the back , I lifted up the Tonneau, put the cans in the back but neglected to close the tail gate securely. When I got to the gas station, Surprise!….tail gate down and cans were gone…
So,
If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough….:curse:
That stinks! Many, many years ago, I used to run two 5-gallon gerry cans strapped into the inside of the back doors of my FJ40. I would run with the top and doors off in the summer. I went to Walmart and when I came out, the straps were cut and the two full cans were gone. What a bummer (but not as much as yours with today's prices).

Sorry to hear man. That sucks for sure.

Makes me kind of wish we had a tailgate open indicator light on the dash now, thinking about it.
Yeah, I don’t know if it was me or it popped open spontaneously.

Your post just has me a little more anxious, as I worried the same thing might happen with my setup; the Diamondback SE cover creates such an airtight seal, that when I close the tailgate, if I don't give a good shove/slam to ensure the latch connects, the air cushion created by the seal can actually prevent it from fully latching.

And I haven't even completed my weather sealing yet; I have more for the sides of the tailgate. So the situation may only get more interesting....

Will just have to get in the habit of slamming the tailgate closed every time to be sure I guess...
