I know it's only a prototype but it looks pretty goofy to me. With all those hinges and hardware at least I know there's gonna be a damper on there! :whew:?

The blue oval brand has filed a patent on a new pickup tailgate that would help it compete with the latest multifunction units from GM and Ram.

The design, which was first reported by CarBuzz, incorporates a side-hinged door in the center of the tailgate that offers close access to the bed, but can also be folded down to open in the traditional fashion.

The idea is similar to Ram's Multifunction tailgate, which can open like barn doors along a 60/40 split.

Hopefully they will use pressure treated wood so it will last awhile.
But, it should be easily replaceable with stuff you can get at any Lowe's or Home Depot. :like:

I've never known Ford Authority to be a satire site.

But that picture HAS to be a joke.

Hi Dave,

Not unlike the Ford station wagon tailgate. it was related to football. The QB option of college football at the time... Open like a tailgate, Open like a door and open like either with the window up or down... Pretty weak advertising.... Not being a stick and/or ball fan (Hockey excepted!) I do not recall the "famous" coach in the commercials.

Best,
Phil

Here's a better look at the way this will work, if it does ever gets produced. I guess the nixed the plywood idea figuring it would cost to much. lol ?

Can only imagine how much the cost would be to replace it in the event of an accident.
No way you could repair it to factory specs...probably replace only.
Would probably cost more than the first car I bought new in 1964......$2200.00 for a Falcon Sprint.

If only they made the outside of the door clear and made that section refrigerated. Then it would look like my fridge where I keep the beer.

Yeah but you can say that about anything in todays vehicles. $1,200 for the BLISS taillights and look how much it cost to replace ($2,200.00) the PCM in @Tracy Bowman Ranger. This is just something else your Insurance will have to cover.

I like the door idea...but... It just makes me think about how many more times I'll hit my shin on the hitch. It's been a few time I've been in a parking lot crying like a girl with a skinned knee
