I'm not arguing with you but the whole race circuit uses these and they travel around the country with these for years now. Go to any MX race and these are all you'll see in the pits. I know some of the larger race teams carry their race fuel in large drums and pump them into these at the track but the smaller teams don't.
I mean, that's exactly what they're designed and approved for, race/pit usage. I used one of these on a recent weekend off-roading trip. I filled it at the gas station a mile down from the trailhead and emptied it while I was at the campsite, so it was otherwise empty - a fine use for something like this.

There's tons of things that you can do that aren't technically legal that you'll get away with. To each their own. I'm not chancing both DOT and EPA fines because I wanted to save a few dollars on gas cans though. As they say, insurance is cheap.

Just because everybody is doing it does not make it legal or safe. Most obvious problem with them is the color. To be DOT compliment gasoline must stored and transported in a red container. I believe there are also rules about venting and sealing to prevent escape of vapors.

While your not likely to get pulled over for just this but should you get stopped for something else, the LEO could ticket you and fine for it. If involved in an accident there could be liability issues, especially if fire or explosion is involved.

Just saying.

For the record - DOT doesn't have canister coloring requirements for fuel transportation, OSHA is where those guidelines come in, so you can transport fuels in whatever color containers you want, but OSHA will have things to say if they're used in jobsites incorrectly.

Thread makes me want to go spend come money on a VP gas can, partially fill it with water, and drive to and from work for a year with it plainly visible to see if I ever get pulled over. If I gambled, I would put money on "no."

That said, to each his own.

Makes me want to get the government more involved in our lives. After all, they are just there to help.
Let's lobby for federal DOT mobile enforcement like the highway patrol.

We could begin by imposing CDL standards for all driver licensing. That would eliminate maybe 2/3 of the licensed drivers right off the bat.

I used to carry the plastic rotopax on my 4Runner when on long off road trips, but they would swell in the heat or changing elevation. Nothing ever broke or leaked but it wasn’t the best feeling seeing a ballooned gas can attached to my vehicle. For my ranger I’m gonna need to figure out a way to mount metal Jerry cans.
The metal wavian jerry cans swell up too, and they don’t go back to their original shape afterwords.

I prefer to keep a lower profile and not be pulled over by the police.
They've got better things to do than look at me, and I've got better things to do than to have to stop and explain myself.
But that's just me.

I just asked a friend who has been patrol for about 15 years. He laughed and said no one cares. Maybe some places do care. I have never even heard of someone being pulled over for something like that.

When I was a patrolman (retired now) I had sooooo much extra time that I would pull over anyone and everyone I thought might be carrying an extra gas can, just to see if it was "legal"
YEAH, RIGHT !!!
26 years, and I never once "checked a gas can" .

No one cares what their asinine requirements are.
5gallon VP containers or styles like it are and have been in use for decades.

keep in mind that you don't have to worry about DOT if you don't have a license
