a few braking distance specs - not debating the superiority of disc vs drum but to some it doesn't matter that much. car and driver I think though had the taco at 180 ft from 70 mph to 0. what would be more telling is repeated panic spots but the braking is primarily upfront anyways.

There is no argument to be had. Disc brakes are superior to drums. Period.

Before I bought my Tacoma a few years ago, my buddy bought one of the first new gen TRD pros and brought it over to show me. First thing I did was laugh at the drum brakes. I couldn't believe it. ?

At Le Mans in 1953, Jaguar was the first cars fitted with disc brakes. They clobbered everybody since their cars didn't have brakes that overheated.

Rivals’ large drum brakes could match discs’ ultimate stopping but not their formidable staying power.

LOL Similar to what we'd tell the new FE's when they entered C141B flight training. "Remember, the lowest bidder built this airplane, so you better pay attention to your preflight checklists."
And some of us know what happened with those C-141’s……. Wings just about falling off.

I had a 2006 Tacoma, as well as an 04 runner. The power train in those was bulletproof, and they still use it in the 4Runner. I’m really not sure why they decided to switch to a new engine/transmission. It’s slower and less reliable. When I worked at a Toyota dealership I saw more new Tacoma engines being torn apart than old ones.

If used Tacos were not so insanely priced, or if Toyota still used that drivetrain in the new models, I would likely have a Toyota. Instead, we get a modified Sienna and Avalon engine that needs redlined for power. Neat.

In regards to the whole thread, I have a pseudo-theory.

I think humans, by nature, are tribal. They need to belong to a group or a movement or something. Add to that, ego and identity. Boom, you get cult followings. Those get perpetuated by marketing and confirmation bias and just ignorant average folks who cling to the "safest" idea without digging more. Politics, economy, medical, retail, finance, everything.

"I hear that's the best" turns into "ThIs iS mY tRiBe yOu mUsT oBeY!!!"

I'm a gun guy. A pretty experienced one. You wanna see some arguments, talk trash on someone's favorite brand or caliber or platform. The amount of people who confidently tell me terrible info at the shop or range, especially rookies, is absurd.

When I was at work, talking about getting a Ranger or a Ram, literally people came out of the woodwork to tell me to buy a Taco. Like a dude two offices over, who I never talked to, was telling me about his buddy's Tacoma.

I'm not saying the Ranger is better or worse, but it was better for me. But saying the Taco is trash, but it's not God's gift.

When my Ranger finally come in, I'm getting a sticker for the back window. Gonna say:

"gEt A tAcOmA, bRo, tRuSt mE, bRo, pLeAse, bRo"

Yup, so true. Especially the gun stuff lol…

Glock fanbois are the best. I’m a gun lover and love all guns but prefer M&Ps, carried them for years. Just fits my hands better than Glocks. When Glock fanboys see that they go crazy and start trying to convince me how much more reliable their Glocks are. I’m like bro, you shoot what? Twice a year? I go through a thousand rounds every few months, and could out shoot you with a HiPoint.

Many years ago, one of the car magazines (can’t remember which) did just what you are suggesting.

What was interesting to me was that, at that point, imports generally outperformed domestics in most things like braking (and often breaking). In this test they did ten or more repeated panic stops and while the imports initially did well, by maybe the fourth stop things were even, by the sixth stop the domestics were performing better and by the eighth some imports actually began to fail with some catching fire at some point.

A lot of time has passed since then and things never stay the same, but it was interesting to me that the imports performed better within a narrow window but domestics provided a much broader spectrum for use.

Um, my last vehicle was a 2014 F150.

It had 75000 miles on it when i traded it in. Still on OEM brakes. As with everything else for that matter except for fluids and tires.

I think you need to provide some proof of said cheep parts.

Not my experience at all.

My 2019 ramger has 36k on it. Brakes look to have at least another 36k on them.
Awesome for you. 75,000 miles is probably just outside the serviceability window, on the high side, for F150 brakes.

Ohio is also mostly flat

Auto reviewers often comment that Ford brakes rarely ”break” new ground. When they make comments like this they are saying Ford provided the bare minimum they had to. If you had taken your F150 to a shop when it had 50,000 miles, driven on flat terrain, and asked to turn the rotors they probably would have refused and recommended new rotors instead because the OEM rotors probably wouldn’t have had enough material to turn.

Lots of assumptions here. Only the western part of ohio is flat. Most is approaching foothills/mtn in PA and west virgina. South of canton, it is not flat.

Not to mention half of those 75k miles were logged in WV. Towing as well. As well as hauling beds full of firewood.
Plus brakes were not needed at trade in.

75k miles PLUS is not "cheap" brakes.

Plus you assume what every reviewer means by a blanket statement. How do know this?
How do you know a shop would not install pads? How do you know how much is lefy on rotors you never seen?

You made a statement that was made as fact. I asked for proof.

If you cant provide proof, it is just your opinion.

Cheaping out on brakes is a rather harsh accusation.

How are these "cheaper" than GM or RAM? Where's the stats to prove?

Seems to me the simple answer is your driving style is very hard on brakes.

Devil6 needs to Google a topography map of Ohio. Eastern an southern parts are not flat by any means. I live in the boring flat area.

I made no assumptions.

I guess at this point the only thing for you to do is to prove it.

1/3 of the state has foot hills. My “mostly flat” holds. Campbell hill isn’t much of anything either.

Lol. At least 5 assumptions.

And you made the comment more than once. Either provide links or stop acting like you are providing facts.
