I'm at roughly 2 year/ 24000 miles with my 2019 Ranger 4x4 sport. Here's my review.
First, background. My very first vehicle when I was 16 was a 1983 Ford Ranger 4x4 bringing me back full circle with my current Ranger. All total I have had 15 pickups to which I can compare the Ranger. Only two were 2wd; the rest were all 4x4.
2019 Ranger – I only bought the Ranger for one reason. My new house garage was too small for my Ram 1500. Looking at smaller trucks at the time, Ranger seemed to be the most capable ( I was concerned about leaving ½ ton), the best looking, and the best priced. Throw in the nostalgia of Ranger being my very first vehicle and Ranger was the clear choice for me. Here’s my pros and cons.
Pros (or things that exceed my expectations)

Pros (or things that exceed my expectations)
- Fits in the garage
- Extremely capable – haven’t missed ½ ton abilities
- Tows fantastic
- Plenty of payload
- Box is smallish but haven’t needed more yet
- Great city mileage 23mpg
- Excellent 4 wheeler – I’m not into crazy stuff but this has done better than any other pick up I’ve had
- Better than expected power from the engine – its not a Hemi but I’ve never felt it was underpowered
- Engine longevity – My daughter has the 2.3l ecoboost in her Mustang and she has 96,000 miles now with zero problems.
- The back seat – terrible, terrible leg room. Luckily I only have back seat passengers for 2% of the time, but heaven forbid you needed the back seat for more than an hour. If you will have back seat passengers often, even kids or car seats, this could be the one deal breaker to consider. It is the #1 reason I might not buy another Ranger if I were in the market again. (I do drive with the seat all the way back in almost every vehicle I drive)
- Stock suspension – hot trash from Ford. Wallows around like a dingy in choppy ocean waters. The good news is the problem is the shocks and not the entire suspension. Last week, I upgraded to Eibach shocks on all 4 corners. It’s an excellent fix, but why should you have to fix a new vehicle? Come on Ford you can do better. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled from the Ram suspension.
- Sync 3 – Chrysler uconnect is hands down better. Sync 3 is slow to respond and freezes up completely at times. I have had it in under warranty more than once.
- 10 speed trans – It works fine, but I’m disappointed in this. It always seems to be in too low gear in sport mode and too high of gear in drive. I have a Lincoln MKC (what it was before the cosair, which you said you have) with the 2.0L and 6 speed auto. That combo is spot on - always in the right gear. It actually feels like the more powerful powertrain than the 2.3L because of it. The bummer is the Lincoln has paddle shifters that I never use because its always in the perfect gear anyway. The Ranger is what needs the paddle shifters because that little +/- button on the shifter is too pesky to manual choose gears regularly.
- Poor interior – It looks like a 2010 Fusion. Not end of the world stuff but disappointing. (another) Come on Ford you can do better.
- Too many warranty items – nothing big or major but more than any vehicle I’ve had since the 80’s. Here’s a tip. Take your Ranger to your Lincoln dealership for service, warranty etc. Lincoln service departments are way more into customer service than Ford ones.
- Highway mileage – getting 23 in the city I thought I would do better than 23 also on the highway. My Hemi powered Ram got 20 on the highway.
- Front rake – After 40 years of wanting to lift a truck and never doing it, I finally did with this Ranger because the factory rake is ridiculous. Even my wife told me I had to do something with it because she was embarrassed to be seen in it. That said, I put the Eibach pro-truck lift on it with 285’s last week and oh baby! That’s what the Ranger was meant to be. It looks fantastic and rides amazing. I highly recommend.
