Ordered a New Ranger. After reading about the numerous problems on this Forum I am not sure I made a good choice.

I'm at roughly 2 year/ 24000 miles with my 2019 Ranger 4x4 sport. Here's my review.

First, background. My very first vehicle when I was 16 was a 1983 Ford Ranger 4x4 bringing me back full circle with my current Ranger. All total I have had 15 pickups to which I can compare the Ranger. Only two were 2wd; the rest were all 4x4.
  • 4- small,
  • 7 - 1/2 ton,
  • 2 - 3/4 ton,
  • 2 - 1 ton dually,
From
  • Ford (6),
  • Ram (6),
  • Toyota (2),
  • Isuzu (1).
Engines
  • 8 cyl (8), 6 (4), 4 (3),
  • turbo'd (4), diesel (3).
I'd rate every one of them as good to great, and could find something to nit pick about each. I’ve never had any major problems with any of them. The most miles I’ve put on a single one is 300,000+ (no it wasn’t a Toyota or a diesel, it was an 03 F150). It comes down to what you need, what you think looks good, and what you can afford. What you choose will be good to great with some things to nit pick.

2019 Ranger – I only bought the Ranger for one reason. My new house garage was too small for my Ram 1500. Looking at smaller trucks at the time, Ranger seemed to be the most capable ( I was concerned about leaving ½ ton), the best looking, and the best priced. Throw in the nostalgia of Ranger being my very first vehicle and Ranger was the clear choice for me. Here’s my pros and cons.

Pros (or things that exceed my expectations)
  • Fits in the garage
  • Extremely capable – haven’t missed ½ ton abilities
  • Tows fantastic
  • Plenty of payload
  • Box is smallish but haven’t needed more yet
  • Great city mileage 23mpg
  • Excellent 4 wheeler – I’m not into crazy stuff but this has done better than any other pick up I’ve had
  • Better than expected power from the engine – its not a Hemi but I’ve never felt it was underpowered
  • Engine longevity – My daughter has the 2.3l ecoboost in her Mustang and she has 96,000 miles now with zero problems.
Cons (or things that don’t meet my expectations)
  • The back seat – terrible, terrible leg room. Luckily I only have back seat passengers for 2% of the time, but heaven forbid you needed the back seat for more than an hour. If you will have back seat passengers often, even kids or car seats, this could be the one deal breaker to consider. It is the #1 reason I might not buy another Ranger if I were in the market again. (I do drive with the seat all the way back in almost every vehicle I drive)
  • Stock suspension – hot trash from Ford. Wallows around like a dingy in choppy ocean waters. The good news is the problem is the shocks and not the entire suspension. Last week, I upgraded to Eibach shocks on all 4 corners. It’s an excellent fix, but why should you have to fix a new vehicle? Come on Ford you can do better. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled from the Ram suspension.
  • Sync 3 – Chrysler uconnect is hands down better. Sync 3 is slow to respond and freezes up completely at times. I have had it in under warranty more than once.
  • 10 speed trans – It works fine, but I’m disappointed in this. It always seems to be in too low gear in sport mode and too high of gear in drive. I have a Lincoln MKC (what it was before the cosair, which you said you have) with the 2.0L and 6 speed auto. That combo is spot on - always in the right gear. It actually feels like the more powerful powertrain than the 2.3L because of it. The bummer is the Lincoln has paddle shifters that I never use because its always in the perfect gear anyway. The Ranger is what needs the paddle shifters because that little +/- button on the shifter is too pesky to manual choose gears regularly.
  • Poor interior – It looks like a 2010 Fusion. Not end of the world stuff but disappointing. (another) Come on Ford you can do better.
  • Too many warranty items – nothing big or major but more than any vehicle I’ve had since the 80’s. Here’s a tip. Take your Ranger to your Lincoln dealership for service, warranty etc. Lincoln service departments are way more into customer service than Ford ones.
  • Highway mileage – getting 23 in the city I thought I would do better than 23 also on the highway. My Hemi powered Ram got 20 on the highway.
  • Front rake – After 40 years of wanting to lift a truck and never doing it, I finally did with this Ranger because the factory rake is ridiculous. Even my wife told me I had to do something with it because she was embarrassed to be seen in it. That said, I put the Eibach pro-truck lift on it with 285’s last week and oh baby! That’s what the Ranger was meant to be. It looks fantastic and rides amazing. I highly recommend.

Convince me that I made a good choice.
2020 4 door Sport 2WD:
First, I’m not real happy about the gear whine that Ford decided was “normal”, (in some, not all, trucks).
But otherwise I really like the truck. It’s comfortable, powerful and I get compliments all the time on the looks.
(I think Ford did a great job on design.)
I go easy on that Turbo, because I think that will probably be a weak spot in time. I change fluids more often than recommended because I don’t think it will have the reliability of all my previous Tacomas (don’t hate ?). But I’m open to finding out. I know the old Ranger was bulletproof.
But it OUTPERFORMS all my previous Tacomas, so there’s THAT.
Yes, overall I like it very much and, so far I’m glad I switched over.

(Note: I invested in a splint that keeps my fingers crossed 24/7- Hey it’s cheaper than an EXTENDED WARRANTY!!)
(Note #2: My buddy who is a former Ford Tech bought the warranty- that worries me a bit.)

You must of had an older Tacoma (1st/2nd Gen) because you wouldn't feel that way if it was a 3rd Gen. lol

You can get the extended warranty up until the 3 year/36K so no need to buy one now. I rarely keep my vehicles longer than 3 years but I might with this one and the turbo along with all the tech and computers onboard has me thinking of getting one. Here's a few places that sell the Ford warranty a lot cheaper than most dealers.

We love our Ranger and it had served us for 18 months and pulled our travel trailer for 2/3 of her entire life. 25K and trouble-free! MPG is amazing for both lifestyles: traveling without trailer & traveling with trailer!

I decided on a Ranger from test driving and researching and comparing various models.

But now I too wait... and wait... and wait.

Then I joined the forum. And read some more, maybe too much.

I too am having second thoughts. I almost posted a "who has regrets?" thread until I saw this.

I think too much time, too much thinking, and too much digging can make anyone second guess just about anything.

Spot on . I love these Forums but maybe I read them to much. I am convinced I made a good choice. Just wish I could get it already to convince me even more.

Lot of nit picking on here about this or that with the Ranger. I just posted a 50k mile report on my 2019 Ranger with zero issues! Everything is working as good as new and the truck drives like it did the first day I got it. Average mpg is on the high side at 27 mpg, which I think is amazing for all the city driving that I do plus my frequent trips out deep into the Everglades. No complaints from this owner.

Ok, I'll bite ... bought a 2019 simply because I really liked it at First sight, did not plan to get it ... it has been a loyal highway Dad cruiser for me as I manage around work and 2 kids in their college years. 44K miles on the clock in 2 years, and no real issues.
Still enjoy the looks and driving of it and getting ready to replace the factory tires.

Full disclosure- I bought a 2019 Lariat FX4 and would offer this:
- Once in a while the 10 speed tranny is to "hunty" for me (is that a word) Sport mode it is not an issue
- Real world 22-24 MPG (easily does 24 mpg Highway at 70-76 MPH
- FX4 suspension is a little soft and wallows a bit, I would be interested in a touch more firm.
- Dash vents have stopped working on me twice on long trips but then on next start of the car they seem ok ... both times on long trips.
- Tows a 4500 ski boat rig from time to time without issue
- Had to visit dealer for a reset of the module that reports to the Ford app.

Oil changes, tire rotations and all is well.

Good luck bro .... if you read any forum enough you will likely find more problems ... since folks don't always post their "non-events".

You can do all the research you can. But in the end it’s just a crap shoot.

7,100 miles in 4 months of ownership and then my 2021 FX4 lariat went to the dealer. It is day 56 at the dealer waiting on the replacement rear axle drivers side. Never towed anything and never worked the truck hard.

I would bet there are many leaking rear drivers side axles but most people don’t climb under the truck to check. There are most likely many with gas in their engine oil but rarely pull the dipstick to check.
