Greetings, I have a 2019 ranger and I am looking for a dog box or dog transportation solution. I have an 80 lbs belgian malinois who I transport regularly. I don't feel comfortable traveling with him loose in the cab over long distances. What are you guys using to transport your dogs? Pic of dog for attention.

By working wog I assume you'll want something more secure than this. I assume there are multiple universal type dog boxes. I've seen them on hunting rigs.

But my dogs dig it for short distances. They're just pets though.

That looks awesome! I am looking for something a little more secure though. I am leaning towards a crate and shell. I just worry about airflow and temperature management. When we are just cruising around the city we put him on the back seat but for out of state interstate travel I want him secure and safe in case of an accident. Thanks for the advice!

Understood completely.

I'd look at something like this.

Pricey, but well worth it for long trips.

I am a retired professional trainer, competitor and Police K-9 Instructor. I have also owned several Malinois and many GSD's. I suggest Impact Dog Crates, the Stationary Model. Very strong, secure and lockable (you do not need to add their slam lock, a padalock works).

What do you recommend for climate control in the bed of the truck with a shell? I live in Utah so we get everything from 1130-below freezing Temps. We also travel to Vegas a lot. Thanks for the advice!

I also have a canopy on all my trucks. I live in Oregon but Summers here can average 85-90 and temps in the 90's and 100's. I have always had side windows open while driving, a 12v accessory fan plugged in to circulate the air. They also make cooling crate mats for dogs....check Amazon. I do know some that will add a roof air conditioner or just an RV roof vent to their canopies. My Ranger Tremor is on order. I will get a canopy with a sliding front window, get a boot between the cab and the canopy and see how much AC I can push back there. When parked for training; I find shaded areas, all canopy windows open, run fan if needed....or even take crate out and put under a pop-up tent canopy. Dog safety is always 100%. Hydration and monitor dogs at all times. FYI: In my RV I have a Waggle Pet temperature monitor that sends alerts to my smart phone. I may get one for the canopy too.

Those look nice!

And you could probably get a color to match your truck.
They have about 6-7 color choices and some custom colors to choose. I inquired if they could paint one in Cyber Orange (using auto paint) and they can't. It may have to do with adhesion. I ordered a gray one for my Bronco/Ranger. The Desert Tan is great for in the house. One thing I do like is they do not scratch easily. Even the inside....dog claws do not seem to cause paint removal. These are high quality crates and are made in Idaho. My Wife and I have 6 of them. Ask for Justin if you call your order in. They will often waive shipping charges and sometimes have an offer for free mats. I HIGHLY SUGGEST GETTING THEIR FLOOR MAT. Spendy at $100.00 but they are tough yet soft, durable, excellent construction and fit very tight to the floor.

Here is my retirement dog on top of his. We have a Ranger and Bronco on order. I sent this to Ford due to our long Bronco wait. (as a joke).

He was a puppy here. He is now 60lbs and as tuff and hard hitting as a Malinois. The bonus....he does not shed and is loved to pieces. He is a Portuguese Water Dog.

Awesome! What size crate would you recommend? My malinois is pretty large for the breed.

I have a small dog that I lovingly cal my "Jack Russell Terrorist". She was trying to eat the interior, so, I bought a Weather Tech front seat protector, 4 of those padded straps for seat belts (protects the seat belt), a couple mirror snow covers (to protect the headrest). Then to keep her somewhat contained, I put her in a car seat.

She makes a fine navigator, if you don't mind getting lost!!!

Make sure it's big enough for the dog to move around and stretch. Stay with the lighter colors because the darker colors will get hot in the sun and for a canopy make sure it is light colored to avoid absorbing the heat. And remember the asphalt in Vegas (or anywhere the temp heats up)gets very hot and only takes seconds to burn the dogs paws.I only have a 12 pounder but I always test the asphalt with the back of my head before I let her walk on it. Last summer we stepped out of a hotel at 10 o'clock in the morning and started across the parking lot and I looked back she sat down and I realized immediately what happened. I ran back and picked her up and it was too late because the bottom of her paws were already scorched. 10 seconds is all it took. I met a vet the other day who had a genuine service dog and I mentioned that to him and he told me he had special pads for the bottom of his dog for hot surfaces like that.
