I like the setup you've got now, nice to have both an awning as well as walls to have a spot to hangout during stormy weather. Any particular reason why you're wanting to upgrade to the poleless batwing system instead?
I have a Foxwing 270 deg awning on my trailer. The more robust 270 awnings that don't require support poles (most actually come with some, though) are a bit more secure to set up if it's breezy. The Foxwing I have (as well as the Batwing which has the support poles preattached) can be tricky to set up with just one person even in a light breeze.

I bought a tent for my 6 ft. Bed went to install and what a pos. Fiberglass rods hang over the edge of box in a pocket and would certainly scratch paint during wind event. It was also very difficult to assemble, granted I only did it once.
I thought it was a complete waste and sent it back amazon.

My experience says there aint no perfect for everything. So, you need to think about and try different strokes. Even do some mods to suit you and if its also wife then ask her first before planking down your money.

Personally, I don't think one solution fits all situation...I love my RTT for it's perch view and in the right climate, it can't be beat. In windy and cold conditions, forget it. At parks where I don't want to be tied down to the site for extended periods, I have a Gazelle T3X pop up ground tent that I can bring as a base camp so I have freedom to explore...I'm working on building an off road square drop and that'll fill the cold season...when the wife comes along, there's Booking.com... ?

Hi Sid,

Agree....RTT would not work for us....wife is almost 80 and has no strength in her legs due to bum knee and hip...already one knee replaced....Climbing a ladder is impossible for her and with poor balance she has trouble on a step stool much less a ladder....so not an option for us...That is one reason we "camp" in our 40ft Alfa motorhome...

best,

Despite some "cranky" comments, I'm grateful for this multi-page thread and everyone who kindly shared their personal opinion and setup ☺

As much as I have wanted a Roof Top Tent since acquiring my Tremor, the barrier of entry to get it fully setup is pretty steep. Some of the parts I would need are not even available right now! (like parts to mount a Yakima rack system on top of my Retrax cover). So I think I'll stick to regular tent camping and upgrade my old traditional 3-person tent to the Gazelle T3X hub tent mentioned by @Msfitoy a few messages above. If I can find one...

I'd love the T4 Overland Edition but it's longer than my 5ft bed when packed... Although I guess I could strap it on top of my Retrax using T-Slot compatible tie downs if I really wanted. Which is something I might end up doing to a T3X if I want to free up space in my bed.

If any of you can think of alternatives to this brand/model, I'll be happy to hear about it.

To all of you, be super-super-commenters, RTT converts or traditional tent campers, I wish you a fantastic camping season now that the temperatures are increasing.

There's no "single" solution for every camping situation with a truck...space is limited and I have to decide, depending where-how long-weather conditions, what my gear will be...my RTT is generally all I need if the weather is moderate...if I plan on camping but want mobility after set up, then I bring the Gazelle...what I'm realizing is that what I really want is a square drop trailer...finished rigs are insanely expensive so DIY will be the next step...

I bought the tent used, and the rack was VERY reasonably priced from Xtrusion Overland.
