So seems like many of you are experiencing this issue, has anyone filed complaints with Ford? Not sure if this can be done or how for this issue, just inquiring. Due to COVID and working from home, I have only managed to put 3000 miles on my Ranger since I bought it last December, so fortunately I haven't noticed chips. However, my normal commute is 60 miles round trip, mostly highway, but this driving has caused several chipped and 1 broken windshield on my previous vehicle over the last 6 years, so I can only imagine what will happen to my Ranger. I did ad the AVS Deflector 2 months ago and plan to buy mud flaps, but it sounds like I may need more.

I had one on mine when I bought it. It was on the rear passenger side on the middle of the wall before the tire well. I had them take care of it. They had it airbrushed. I was told to strip the paint and have it repainted , that it might not match!

Likewise, my previous 2011 Ranger (Silver) seemed to have much tougher paint and less likely to chip. At a glance, at least the paint on the 2020 looks very smooth and even without blemishes.
It's true, the paint does look good, but looks are only skin deep (as they say) and in this case it's VERY thin skin. The real bothersome thing is that they just seem to appear out of nowhere; on my old truck, you knew what caused the damage, as you would hear the rock or experience the collision. And how is it I have what looks like rock chips on my tailgate and doorsill ?

I have not had any chips but I put a bug deflector and splash guards within a week of buying...now I am glad I did. I also use a ceramic coating which claims it protects from chipping.

AVS deflector. Fits right to the hood, looks great and does a great job preventing chips on the hood.

Is this the adhesive installation type... and if so does it cause any paint damage over a long period of time?

Yes, I've got the problem too. It's also the same on my Escape and RS. i'm wondering if it has to do with the new water based paint mfgrs are using these days.

Since my '19 was an early build, I had the dealer check the initial issues this and other forums were bringing up. He said the bed was 1/8" out of alignment. I told him to leave it. Currently on the driver's side the lower bed has so many chips half the paint is gone. The PAX side is fine. Should have adjusted it.

Re, bug shield. Ford, as well as all manufactures these days, spend hundreds of hours "tuning" their vehicles in the wind tunnel. A wind deflector really throws a wench in the air flow. Personal experience on my Father's big ford sedan and the Explorer I previously owned resulted in about a 3 MPG loss. I took mine off and mileage returned to normal. I would suggest a film instead. I filmed a Volvo XC90 previously owned and after 75,000 miles there were no chips, save a couple that were there prior to film install. The film adsorbed the dings.

The paint on these trucks is absolute garbage. No idea what to do about it. Had it for a year and there is plenty of rusty spots already. I know the entire thing will need to be painted in a year or two.
My paint is ok, but plenty of little defects in it. I would be curious if the paint quality improved on the trucks built on or after January 2020. The reason I say this is I have good knowledge that MAP got a completely new paint system installed for the Ranger and soon to be added Bronco. The painting equipment they were using before that was carried over from Focus assembly and was not ideal to be painting the trucks.

I noticed a few chips but nothing crazy though I might get it repainted and have a better clearcoat later down the road

I had a few chips show up right after I got the truck but I am not getting any more. I think when they painted the truck there was something on the truck that caused the "chips" I got.

I drive around enough work trucks on the highway I should have a ton, but really not much. I wonder if geography and weather plays into this. I am considering the AVS hood protector since it's cheap and good looking ($70).

They advertise but are out of some with built in marker lights.

Hi Paul,

Someone here mentioned they thought Ford switched to waterbased paint...wonder if that is a legacy of waterbased paint? When I retired they were trying much lower organic based solvent paints. Waterbased at that time had serious orange-peel issues. My clearcoat seems to be working okay on my 2019 Ranger.

Good point Phil,

It would be interesting to learn the exact issue on the 5Gen paint and if it is or is not a good standard quality? It seemed that the outside edges on my two front doors chipped too easily when I accidently opened them on some objects inside my garage. Again, the 2011 Ranger had very endurable paint.
