We have State Farm, they replace ours, no deductible.

And, FWIW, unless you get the glass from FORD... that Ranger text at the bottom of the windshield won't be on the replacement.
Someone had said earlier the glass company couldn't find anything but OEM, so they go the Ford glass, even though it was thru someone like Safelite.

Happened to me the third month of owning my truck. Immediately took it to a auto glass place to fill in the chip. Priced a new windshield and then told them fill in the best they could, lol.

That was one of the first things I noticed and mentioned the salesman, why does it say Ranger where no one can see it?

You can see it.. inside the truck. I thought it was kind of cool... and a very quick way to see if the windshield is oem. Probably costs Ford 1 cent a truck to do it.

A lot of the aftermarket windshields are quite horrible in respect to clarity.

Sorry about your luck, man. Living here in Arizona, it is almost mandatory that you have full glass on your vehicle. I can't tell you how many windshields I've replaced over the years living here. But, similar to you, I also had a nice big star in my glass less than a 1000 miles into driving my new Ranger. The weird part of mine was it was on the passenger side window. Not the windshield. Just driving down the highway and then smack. It spooked me for a second it was so loud. Those damn quarries nearby are a real hazzard when their delivery trucks don't bother to vibrate off all the spare stone like they should. It was just incredibly unusual that it happened to a side window. Almost like it bounced off another car and flew sideways into my truck. Pretty frustrating. And then, the process of getting the window replaced was frustrating, too, since my insurance apparently wanted to replace it with NOT a factory piece of glass. I wasn't having that.

Mine (for my Transit Connect) covered full price for a non-Ford replacement, saying I must pay the difference if I wanted OEM.
I told them it would be OK, provided that the replacement was "substantially equal" in quality and fit. ...They sent OEM at no extra charge.
This happened to me, as well, when I had to get the side window replaced because of a large star. I have full glass with Progressive and that includes ALL glass around the truck. But, they replaced the window with a non-Ford part. It looked similar, but you could tell the logo in the bottom corner wasn't as "crisp" looking. So, I had them come back to replace it again with a real Ford part. Had to pay an extra $75 to do it. I complained, but they wouldn't back down. Will probably go car insurance hunting in the not-too-distant future here again.

I've repaired chips like this with the $10 kit from local auto parts store and you couldn't tell there was ever any damage. Like others have said, depends on where the chip is and I understand you're asking from a different standpoint than just how to repair.

Insurance replaced my windshield although it cost me the deductible. Since the truck was so new I asked and was given OEM glass. Safelite did the install and the calibration.

I have glass coverage on my insurance also (as @AzScorpion says, it's nearly mandatory here), and had Safelite come and replace the windshield a couple months ago. They ask if you want the Ford windshield or if you'll accept a substitute. I chose the Ford windshield and Safelite had no issues getting me one and doing the required recalibrations. I now have a brand new chip in my brand new windshield, and will be getting Safelite to fill it (hopefully) before the crack spreads.

Progressive is the only car insurance I had trouble with getting a repair done through. They have to pay for those constant commercials somehow. Flo can go suck it.

I know mine covers both 100%. I have the option of the glass coverage with a deductible and my premium will be a little lower. One good thing is at least it was the windshield and not the hood or roof. It's a lot easier to fit than a huge dent.

I found my first windshield chip today while I was cleaning the window. Its in the black triangle area right above the collision avoidance camera cutout. collision avoidance still works as it should and it hasn't spread any and its not visible from the cab; guess I'll keep an eye on it for now.

One thing I have a question about on the windshield - does anything need to be recalibrated with a new windshield? Mine has the automatic high beams that come with the 302A. I believe the eye for this is on the backside of the rearview mirror, facing forward. At least that's what I think that thing is. I know on Subarus with EyeSight, you HAVE to get the glass replaced (or at least recalibrated) by a dealer.
The little sensor on the mirror's housing is for the rear-view mirror's dimming only (auto-dimming mirrors have a sensor on the fore and aft of the mirror to compare ambient light to the light from behind your vehicle). Auto-headlamp sensor is probably on the box that is on the windshield. Why these are two different systems, i dont know.

Had the same giant rock chip in my new Corvette. My insurance company sent me to a local glass shop to replace the windshield with a after market POS. I negotiated with Chevrolet parts and they sent over a OEM windshield. The results was no extra cost to me, just my $100 deductible.

Why the obsession with factory glass?

I've had windshields replaced. I'm sure they didn't use "factory glass."

Never noticed a problem. Matter of fact, in my experience aftermarket glass holds up better than factory. My FiST, and my wife's CX-5 both needed windshields within the first few months of ownership from chips that cracked out. Aftermarket glass has lasted on both of them multiple years, not one chip.

Do you guys really think Ford makes glass? Nope. They contract it out to companies like Carlex, who also makes Carlite, aftermarket glass.

Ford hasn't made their own glass for decades.

Also, in my experience safety equipment may or may not need to be recalibrated after replacement. If it does the vehicle should tell you it's needed. At least that's how it worked on the wife's Mazda.
