20 years ago I'd be all over a diesel in my Ranger, but having dealt with various new diesel emissions control and handicaps that come on them these days, not a chance. More hassle than the the added torque & efficiency are worth IMO.

I too was interested in a diesel Colorado before I ever got the Ranger. Especially in the ZR2 trim. Having the power in the Ranger, I can’t see myself wanting to go to a diesel. Even with the rack and tent my stock 2.3L still gets up and goes.

i had a few trucks that were diesels over the years. but, they were all pre bs and silly legislation. good point about modern diesels in light trucks. regens, def fluid ?. Best truck i ever had was a one ton dodge with the 12 v inline cummins. that thing just kept on running. i used it hard and didnt care if i broke it and it just took it and kept going. at 250k i replaced a lift pump . at 350k ish a starter, everything else was just normal upkeep. sold it at around 500k in 2013 and the guy still drives it.
to be fair - i did go through about 2 of the old getrag transmissions. guy that bought it put a nv4500 in it and loves it.

Well, not my Ranger, but a Youtuber another member introduced here sometime back.

Windrock Off-Road Park, looks like good times but he swamps his alternator.
no disrespect to this guy but that was 100000000% his fault, dude full sent it into a deep mud pit im surprised he didnt hydrolock it with all the water his intake probably drank too. Slow and steady wins the race especially in water that bow wave and angle was ridiculous.

not disagreeing with his fault on the full tilt boogie. he was moose foot on the go pedal. however, I would have attempted that one and im pretty cautious. i would have walked it first and looked around then taken the best line at about half the speed he did. once the water sorta calms down and you remove the wave he blasted up its not really that deep. appears to be maybe 1-2 feet deep at the max. so if we picked an average depth of 1.5 or 18 inches depth. most of us on r5g have around a 30 - 33 inch tire. some taller and shorter. thats pretty close to the half tire "safe zone". ive dug around under my truck for a good while and both the breathers for the diffs are well above that level. the air intake for the motor is well above it and door openings etc are also. all the other parts should be able to take a good splash and are designed to be weather resistant. im not saying that makes it easy to drive in or smart etc. and i would understand others deciding not to take the ranger they love into something like that. just that i wouldnt expect it to hurt most 4x4 trucks jeeps atv and so on. if it was a lower car or cuv sure. i think some one said the issue he had wasnt really about depth but that he had caked the alternator full of mud and slop making it over heat and choke so that water feature was sort of the straw that broke the camel.

I 've met the young man that put that video up. Some observations...

-He is a really nice kid. Truly comes of genuinely as a good person. After 16 years in law enforcement, I've kinda got a sense for when a person is a shit bag and when a person isn't. He is in the "isn't" category.

-He's young, and inexperienced. From my times out with him in a group, I got the sense he's relatively new to 4-wheelin'. For that matter, I'm (getting) older and I'm inexperienced. (HA!)

-He's got youthful excitement and energy. You kind of get it in his videos. He's got it in real life. I think it translates into his driving.

-Here in the "Dirty South", people seem to like to bomb through mud puddles to make the biggest mess possible. I think it's a cultural thing. HA!

All that being said, I cringe with every creek crossing waiting for my turn to need a new alternator. I wish they had sealed units available on the aftermarket for our trucks. Maybe with the Bronco running the 2.3 someone will come out with one.

But there will still be folks who would try to defeat the protection...

I completely agree it was doable if he had been smart about how he went about it. I would have done it too, hell I've done stuff deeper than that regardless of that going in at that angle with that much force creating that much of a bow wave is a recipe for disaster regardless of what you are driving hence the go slow is smart. The depth isn't the issue the angle and force is.

I'd rather hang with this kid than all the mall crawlers who's biggest risk is wearing out the paint from over-washing their truck.
agreed! one thing ive noticed from his videos is he is having fun and enjoy it. we all should. he also limped the truck home with a pretty good plan .

Hi john, you should invite him to come on board at r5g! it bet he would fit in perfectly. he is already famous around here from the youtube videos he would be a celebrity.

Absolutely hes got a sweet rig and a great attitude and a good head on his shoulders, all he needs is to know when to give it the beans and when to be more tactful with the right pedal lol but I'd roll with him any time

Yes indeed. Getting stuck, breaking things, and exceeding your limits are all part of the fun. Doing recoveries and trail repair is as much wheeling as driving is.

Hmm. So not only the Ranger 2.3 but also Bronco 2.3 have the same low-down alternator placement. Yikes. I guess if my street/neighborhood floods a bit as it will do during our spring and summer downpours, just don't go flying down it like I see half the neighborhood doing. (Guilty myself of doing it in other trucks, but never killed an alternator.)

I once thought I killed a '98 Ranger on a flooded city road a few years back (just splashed the coil pack, pushed it to a parking lot and let it dry over night, fired up the next day without problems - but the alternator in that truck was high up and tucked a bit...) but this would be a much bigger issue than that if I did it in my '22...
