My daddy, bless him, also wouldn't throw away wood and built/made lots of stuff over the years before he passed. You guys have just brought up old memories...good ones...the sounds of him working in his shop...the smell of sawdust or maybe the finishes he used...the care he took on his projects.

Thank you for that.

Beautiful work. The corners on that treasure box are going to be my next experiment. Did you do that on table saw or jig.?
I used the Incra I-Box jig and the Freud Box Joint cutter set on the table saw. It takes a little work to get the settings just right, but once you do, it goes fast. I used hide glue on the joints, but I don't like the way it shows through....I'd recommend not using it on visible joints with light colored wood.

Still nice work. I like the look of the pegged corners and no screws or fasteners.

I sat down in one of my friends kitchen chairs one day and it just kinda exploded Under me. She asked should we fix or trash. I said let me take “the pieces” to the wood shop and see what I can do. 😜. What follows is what I went through to save that chair. She said I don’t want a bunch of screws in it. I put 16 screws in that chair and I challenged her to find one.

She couldn’t even tell which broken spindles I replaced or find a screw. And it’s rock solid now.

Repurposed old doors. These doors are probably near one hundred years old give or take a few and are very heavy solid heart pine. I was going to repaint them so I started stripping the four layers of paint in preparation for that work. Once I saw how beautiful the grain was after stripping the old paint, I decided to leave them natural with several coats of polyurethane. I like them much better.

Beautiful! Had to be some, work, especially sanding the raised panels, but you made the right decision. How many doors are you refinishing?

I’ve done four to date and yes it is a lot of work. I was worried that it may be lead paint so I bought a lead test kit. Fortunately, it was not lead. I used an electric heat gun to pop the paint loose, then hand scraped the bulk of paint off. Then I ground down an old screw driver to fit The contour of the raised surfaces to scrape them clean. Then I used a Dremel tool with a wire brush to get into the very corners. Then sanded and sanded and sanded and, well, you know what I mean. While I had them wrestled off the hinges, I carved out the door latch pockets very carefully to install new brass latch mechanisms. I’m pretty happy with the results. Added two of the other doors.

UPDATE:
I’ve since finished the big box and had it up for sale but nobody wanted to pay the price I wanted for quality custom work. Guess most want cheap sawdust junk and guess what, I’m not upset and am very happy with it at the foot of my bed. It has had two coats of red oak stain and five coats of spray lacquer. The custom order cushion fits well and I installed a friction hinge that holds the lid open wherever you put it. I left the inside bare so that whatever you put in there won’t absorb the smell of the finish.
