Having learned how to have the transmission gears displayed on the dash I've watched as my Ranger accelerates from a stop. Unless I very, very slowly apply gas the truck goes from first to third gear. The engine revs slightly more than other shifts as second gear is skipped.

Second gear is there. I can slap shift the truck and go through all the gears, including second. But in normal, automatic operation second is skipped every time.

Anyone know why this is happening, if it's normal, or do I need to head to the shop?

It is normal, it skips second. It's Skip Shift. Helps with economy. Smooth as butter. :)

Sometimes mine goes 1,3,5,6,7, etc.

Normal behavior.

You really have to get on it hard to not skip second in normal mode.
I have a tune installed (LIVERNOIS) and it eliminates MOST of the 2nd gear skips or really all gear skips EXCEPT when I am really LIGHT on the throttle, then it will skip 2nd but that usually only happens in heavy traffic (the light on the throttle thing...)

Yeah, my truck normally goes 1-3-5-6..., occasionally doing a 1-3-4-5-6..., and sometimes doing 1-2-4-6...

It just depends on how much you're getting into it, the gear ratios in the lower gears are designed really close to keep the engine in the power band under heavy acceleration or load.

Skipping second makes for a smoother transition from stopped. If you use the tow button second is active and very useful.

Thanks guys for explaining it all to me. I won't worry if the truck skips second gear.
